
SIMMENTALS ‘ON THE MONEY’ IN SOUTH WEST OF ENGLAND!
This week we’ve been down through Scotland, into the borders, and the North West of England.
Today we’re taking a look at the South West of England and Simmentals again topping sections across commercial sales in the region.
Sale centres included are Hallworthy; Halsworthy; Frome; Sedgemoor; and Exeter. With efficiency, added value, profit and performance, there’s more to Simmental!
£2260 SIMM STEERS TOP HALLWORTHY
On 11th September at Hallworthy, just shy of 200 store cattle. Top spot at £2260 going to PC Wood of Bideford with a super pair of 24 month Simmental x Steers with huge frame and plenty of stretch. ID & SS Backway of St Eval had another great day, his best a deep bodied framey pen of four Simmental x Steers at 17 months away at £2140 and another single slightly smaller at £2000.
A sale of 250 calves at Frome on 10th September saw cracking Simmental bulls from MP & MA Hannam topping the trade at £640 and £580.
SIMMS TOP BOTH STORE STEERS & HEIFERS AT FROME
On 8th September and a sale of 127 stores at Frome, Simmentals topped both the heifer and steers sections. Simm heifers from AP & JJ Williams, Bristol led the day at £2030, whilst Simm steers from the same home led that section at £1960.
1-MONTH-OLD £700 SIMM LEADS SEDGEMOOR CALVES
Sedgemoor’s sale of just under 500 calves on 6th September saw the top of the day being £770 for a 1 month old Simmental bull from P Frost.
A super entry of 144 calves at Exeter on 5th September, saw top of the day being £620 for a Simmental bull from Messrs RWG & M Dare & Sons of Axminster who sold others at £600. Heifer calves topped at £570 for a Simmental from the same home.
MARKLOVE SIMM CULL COW AT £2549
In a sale of cull cows at Frome on 3rd September, thick well fleshed Simmental cows from HJ Marklove and Mrs D Marklove realised 284.5p/kg 3 times grossing £2549 and topped the day’s trade! A Fleckvieh cow from WP Hurd, Warminster topped the ppkg at 301.5p, making £2407.
At Sedgemoor’s sale of 774 store cattle on 30th August, the top price of £2580 was for Simmental steers from ME Sampson & Son, Honiton.
On 27th August, and a sale of prime cattle, Simmentals led the UTM heifers at £2093 from CA AC Alvis, Radstock. In a sale of reared calves, cracking Simmental heifers from JAW Bendal & Sons to £718 and their Simmental bulls to £690. In a sale of calves, well-presented Simmentals from NAC Taylor saw bulls to £660 and heifers from TC Taylor to £470.
CHURCHILL SIMM HEIFERS TOP SEDGEMOOR AT £2332
In a sale of finished and forward cattle at Sedgemoor on 27th August, heifers topped at £2,332.37 for a very well finished 687kg Simmental from RD Churchill. Further Simmentals rose to £2,251.13 from CHJ Atwell & Sons.
Sedgemoor’s sale of prime cattle on 25th August saw 696kg Simm X heifers from MP & DM Hine top the section at £2,495.16.
At the sale of store cattle at Sedgemoor on 23rd August, the day’s joint top price was £2400 for 2x Simmental steers from B & P Horsey & Son, Taunton.
STRONG SIMM TRADE AT HALLWORTHY STORE SALE
On 21st August and a sale of store cattle at Hallworthy, the day’s joint top price went to G Martyn & Sons of Boyton with his pair of 25 month Simmental x Steers away at £2270, another younger pair with length and depth to £2200. ID & SS Backway of St Merryn had another sensational run with their top being a Simmental x Steer long, wide and deep to £2060 and a second at £2050, with a pen of five Simmental x beautifully presented to £1980. Janet Carter of Cambourne ran in close in the heifers to top price with a Simmental heifer away at £2000. Cows and Calves from J Carter topped out at £2140 for a Simmental x Cow with Bull Calf at foot.
At Frome’s sale of prime cattle on 20th August, UTM heifers were topped at £2449 for Simms from RMJ & AL Robinson, Blue Pewsham. At a sale of calves, a cracking entry of Simmentals from M Carver sold to £490 (the top heifer price) and £440.
At Exeter’s sale of prime cattle on 18th August, several strong heavyweight prime cattle forward. Reg Wills, Ashburton sold solid looking Simmental crossbred steers for £2246 (686kg x 328ppk). In the prime heifer section top was £1891 (512kg x 370ppk) for a nicely covered Simmental from Kathleen and Lewis Slade of Widecombe in the Moor.
The sale of store cattle at Hallworthy on 14th August saw a joint top price of £2300 including an outstanding, well grown Simmental steer sold by ID & SS Backway of St Eval. Suckler bred Simmental heifers realised £1930, again for ID & SS Backway.
£2450 STANDOUT SIMM STEERS TOP EXETER STORES
Exeter’s sale of store cattle on 8th August, a tremendous run of mainly pure bred Simmental forward types from Stephen and Angela Pearce up from Menheniot headed the sale with their standout Simmental steers reaching a top of £2450.
240 stores at Hallworthy on 7th August to a top of £2380. A super run of cattle from start to finish with ID & SS Backway of St Eval topping with an outstanding run of Simmental and Limousin x cattle. There best a pair of Simmental x Steers at 19 months full of meat to £2380 and a single block of a bullock to £2300, next was a Simmental x Limousin bullock which was a block and deep away at £2290, then another pair of Steers to £2160. It was the Backway family also topping the heifers with a stunning Simmental x Heifer full of meat and a super outlook to £1920.
In a sale of calves at Frome on 6th August, a Simmental heifer topped the continental heifers at £550 from SC Eavis. Simmental bull from NAC Taylor to £485.
BINNINGS SIMM HEADS SEDGEMOOR BEEF COWS AT £2403
At Sedgemoor on 4th August, beef cows soared to a very solid £2,403.21 for a 833kg Simmental from R Binning. In a sale of busk calves and stirks on 2nd August, heifers sold to a top of £1390 for a Simmental from ER Rosewell.
In the week ending 1st August at Frome, and a sale of prime cattle, Waddon Farms Ltd sold their Simmental x heifers at £2331 (347.5p/kg).
