We’ve been bobbing round the country and featuring auction marts where Simmental cattle are continuing to do the business and attract top prices across all sale commercial sale sections.
Today we turn to Harrison & Hetherington and look at some Simmental highlights over the last few weeks, at sales at Borderway Mart, Carlisle in the North West of England, and St Boswells in the Scottish Borders. There’s more to Simmental!

£1135 SIMMENTAL BULL CALF TOPS TRADE
On Wednesday 10th September Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of calves at Carlisle. Trade continued to keep at high levels. CM Kirkpatrick, Howthat topped the trade at £1135 for a Simmental bull calf. He also sold to £1030 and £1010, with heifers to £960, £940 and £930.
PRIME SIMMENTAL BULL AT £3253
A massive entry of 123 prime bulls forward at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 8th September. Simmentals sold to £3253.84 for 914kgs from Messrs Bell, Roxburgh Mill, Kelso.
At H&H’s sale of prime cattle at St Boswells on 8th September, Simmental bullocks to £3271.67 led the trade, and from Clark, Wellheads.
HOWTHAT TOPS CALF TRADE WITH £1020 SIMM
On Wednesday 3rd September, and at the weekly sale of calves at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, the bull calf trade was topped by a Simmental at £1020 from C Kilpatrick, Howthat.
CASTLEWIGG PRIME SIMMENTAL BULL AT £3404
In a sale of prime bulls at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 1st September, Simmentals sold to £3404 for an 851kg bull from Castlewigg Farm. On the same day, Simmental prime steers sold to £2813 for an 813kg steer from Prior House.
£2000 KIRTLETON HOUSE BULL TOPS WEANLING SALE
On Wednesday 27th August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of weanling cattle at Borderway Mart, Carlisle. Simmentals led the bulls at £2000 from Kirtleton House, with others from the same home at £1980; £1720; and £1600.
At a sale of 251 cast cows at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 25th August, the trade for Simmentals was topped at £2600 for a 892kgs cow from Messrs Harrison, Sceugh Farm. In the dairy cast cows, Fleckvieh cross cows from Bluestone Farming sold to £2299. On the same day and a sale of prime bulls, Caerlaverock Estate sold a 710kg Simm bull to £2769. Prime Simmental steers sold to £2831 at 782kgs from Outer Woodhead.
WELLHEADS SIMMENTAL BULLOCKS TO £3111
At H&H’s sale of prime cattle at St Boswells on 25th August, Clark, Wellheads sold Simmental bullocks to £3111.67. Simm bullocks from Cowe, Oldcastles sold to 385ppkg.
CONNELL FARM SIMMS TOP BULL & HEIFER CALVES
On 20th of August, Harrison and Hetherington held show and sale of calves at Baorderway with 279 calves forward, and trade on fire. Simmental calves topped both the bull and heifer sections! Bull calves topped at £1130 from a 3 month Simmental from Connell Farm, Newton Stewart. The same home led the heifers for a Simmental at £1020.
In a sale of weaners & stirks at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, Simmental heifers sold to £1530 for a yearling from Messrs Trafford, Springfield. Connell Farm Ltd, East Drummodie sold a pen of 3-6 month old dairy bred Simmental bulls to £1020.
At H&H’s sale of prime cattle on 18th August at St Boswells, Simmental heifers sold to £2596.56 from Huntington Farm Partnerships, and to 405ppkg for Simms from Baird & Son, Lurdenlaw Farm. Simmental bullocks sold to 396ppkg from Young, Nisbet Farm.

DINNANS SIMMENTAL BULL SELLS TO £3325
H&H’s Primestock Sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 18th August saw Messrs Campbell, Dinnans, sell the top priced Simmental stock bull for 1216kg, 273.5p to £3325 to Les Fell. Messrs Campbell, Dinnans, sold the top priced Simmental cow for 847kg, 311.5p to £2638 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot, sold a run of cows to top at 858kg, 285.5p to £2449 for a Fleckvieh X.
13-MONTH-OLD STARLAW FARM SIMM BULL SELLS FOR £3229
Borderway’s sale of prime cattle & bulls, also on 18th August, saw Simmental bulls from Messrs Marshall, Starlaw Farm, Bathgate, West Lothian topped at £3229.20 for a 13 month old, and average £3183.83 for 9. In the prime cattle, Simmental cross bullocks sold to £3263.88 from Messrs Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton.
On 11th August at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, Messrs Trafford, Springfield Farm sold the top priced Simmental cow for £2606, 882kgs, 295.5p to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold a Simmental bull for £2892, 999kgs, 289.5p, to Rob Metcalf.
In a sale of weaned cattle at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 6th August, Simmental bulls topped at £2060 from P & CM Goldsborough, Moffat and featured in the day’s leading prices.
On 6th August, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Store cattle at Borderway Mart, Carlisle with 300 forward. Simmental steers sold to £2500 from Newtown Farm, Carlisle.
HUNTINGTON FARM PRIME SIMM HEIFERS AT £2880
At St Boswells Primestock Sale on 4th August, Simmental heifers from Huntington Farm Partnership led the section at £2880.28. Simmental bullocks from Lamont, Dunslaw sold to 410ppkg. A Simmental cast cow from John Jeffrey, Kersknowe Farm, made £2340.36.
