The October 2019 born Denizes Knockout from Mr MA Barlow, Four Oaks, Ulnes, Nr Leyland, Lancashire took the top sale price of 9500gns at the British Simmental Cattle Society’s May Sale at United Auctions Stirling Agricultural Centre on Sunday May 2nd.

Packed with pedigree and performance figures, Denizes Knockout 19 is by the herd’s stock bull Blackford Galaxy, the 2018 Royal Highland Champion, and is out of the Ashland Tornado daughter Denizes Melody.  Paying the top price was prolific Simmental purchaser Liam Muir, Upper Onston, Stromness, Orkney who was buying for a client in Orkney.  Commenting, Mr Muir said: “Denizes Knockout is a super bull with both quality and eye appeal.  As well as strong milk figures he has a solid Terminal Sire Index and Self Replacing Index and is just a really good all-round bull for Orkney.”  On the day Mr Muir bought four Simmental bulls in all and in addition to the top price bought Denizes Kruser at 3200gns; Westridge Kinross at 5500gns; and Drumsleed Kashmir at 4000gns.  Over the last three Stirling Simmental Sales, Mr Muir has bought twelve Simmentals in all for clients in Orkney and the North of Scotland.

DENIZES KNOCKOUT, 9500GNS

Prolific vendors at Stirling this is the second time the Lancashire based Denizes herd has topped the Simmental bull trade at Stirling.  Commenting after the sale, Michael Barlow said:  We try to breed and bring bulls with length, width, good tops, that are structurally correct and carry a bit of style.  The cow families in the herd have a lot of milk and we’re looking for that continual improvement in maternal (milk) figures and calving figures to meet the demands of both the pedigree breeders and commercial producers.”  This year the Denizes herd will be calving 60 plus pedigree Simmental cows.

Following on from the record Stirling Simmental Sale average set at the February Sale, the May Sale saw another record average set for the fixture with twenty-one bulls selling to average £5345, up by £510 on the year.  The clearance rate through the ring was a healthy 81%.  The record average came hot on the heels of the breed’s sale at Worcester on the previous day which had seen another breed record average mark set for the bulls sold.

Two bulls made 8000gns.  The first of these was Roma Kinetic 19 from Mr RS & ME Weatherup, Romavale, Ashybank, Hawick.  This November 2019 born bull, carrying length and shape, is by Islavale Frontier 14, a Curaheen Bandit son, and is out of the Dinton Nautical daughter Roma Nina’s Fancy.  Carrying good figures for calving ease putting the bull in the top 10% of the breed, Roma Kinetic 19 was purchased by D McCallum, Shoreton, Culbokie, Dingwall.  The 8000gns was a sale top price for the herd which is planning to have a sale of females in September of this year.

Also at the 8000gns mark was the youngest bull in the catalogue in the shape of Overhill House King Henry 19 from Richard McCulloch, Over Hill House, Armadale, West Lothian.  December 2019 born, this bull is by Islavale Heston 16 and is out of the Corskie Copper sired Overhill House Gretel.  A feature of the demand on the day, King Henry carried goof performance figures with being in the breed’s top 5% for both Terminal Sire and Self Replacing Indexes, and in the top 20% for Maternal (Milk).

Islavale Keyo 19 from Mr WS Stronach, Berryleys Farm, Grange, Keith, Banffshire made 6500gns when selling to TL Stirling, Auchterblair Farm, Carrbridge, Inverness-shire.  November 2019 born this Wolfstar Elusive 13 son is out of the EX93 classified cow, Islavale Danielle, a Clonagh A Super Star daughter.

ISLAVALE KEYO, 6500GNS

Also selling at 6500gns was Coltfield Kilcoy 19 from JC MacIver, Wester Coltfield, Forres, Moray.  Coltifield Kilcoy 19 is the first son to be sold by Rockytop Invader 17 the herd’s stock bull purchased 14,000gns and who classified EX92 at three years old.  November 2019 born, Coltfield Kilcoy 19 was knocked down to MM&A Campbell, West Watten, Wick, Caithness.

Crudie Farming Company, Crudie Farm, Arbroath, Angus made 6000gns when selling Crudie Kabull 19.  A Blackford Iolair 17 sired bull, Kabull 19 is out of Crudie Iona, a Drumlone Fabulous 14 daughter.  Snapping this bull up was Islay Estates, Bridgend, Isle of Islay.  Rounding off a good day, the previous lot Crudie Kansas 19, another Blackford Iolair 17 son made 5500gns and was another purchase by Islay Estates. These were the first calves from the herd’s stock bull Blackford Iolair, to be offered at sale.
