• Lisglass Heifer wins Senior Championship
• Haystar Revolver lifts the Junior Championship
Northern Ireland Simmental breeders were out in force at the fourth staging of the NI Club’s Annual Calf Show held on Saturday 30th November, at Ballymena Livestock Market. Fourteen breeders from around the province exhibited with a catalogue of close on fifty calves, and with strong support for the young handler classes. The event is held within the 4 Breed Calf Show that in addition to the Simmental breed, comprises of classes from the British Blue; British Blonde; and Saler breeds respectively.
Judge for the day was Cara Moore from Beragh ,Co Tyrone who farms at home with her parents John and Diane on their family farm, breeding pedigree Simmentals under the noted Omorga Simmental prefix. In the Young Handlers section, the judge for the day was Molly Bradley of the Dernasigh Herd, Armagh, Co Armagh.
Dermody Royal Lucy Senior Champion
Winning the first female class of the day and going on to take the Senior Championship was Dermody Royal Lucy from the Lisglass herd of JL & CJ Weatherup, Ballyclare, Co Antrim. This September 2023 heifer, purchased in August at the Reduction Sale of Irish breeder Mr N Jagoe, is by the prolific Saltire Impressive and is out of Dermody Lucy 2, a Dermotstown Delboy (ET) EX 92 daughter. Commenting, the judge Cara Moore said: “My choice of Senior Champion just caught my eye immediately she came into the ring. She’s a very stylish, correct heifer and had great power.” In her class, Dermody Royal Lucy got the nod ahead of her stablemate Lisglass Panache, an October 2023 born Omorga Volvo daughter.
Lisglass Ruby
It was a strong day’s showing for the 35-cow Lisglass herd who also took a red ticket in the second heifer class with the February 2024 born Lisglass Ruby, a Mullynock Gallant 15 (ET) daughter. Ruby is a sister of Lisglass Primrose, who had a successful show season in 2023, and who herself is aimed at being a part of next year’s show team.
Haystar Revolver Junior Champion
In the Juniors it was a Championship win for ‘top gun’ Haystar Revolver from G Hayes & Son, Upper Ballinderry, Lisburn, Co Antrim. This April 2024 born bull calf is sired by Lissadell Nailer, and is the second daughter out of Raceview Lively HW Nicolet, by Clonagh Tiger Gallant, and who was purchased from a Raceview reduction sale. Of her Junior Champion, Haystar Revolver, Cara Moore said: “I thought this Junior Champion was just a super calf with plenty of shape and who moved extremely well.” Revolver is due to be weaned in the next month and forward plans include aiming him for next year’s NI Simmental National Show, and beyond that possibly the 2025 Stirling October Sale. Again in a strong class of ten calves, it was a one-two for the 15-cow Haystar herd with Haystar Round One taking second place. May 2024 born, this calf is another by Lissadell Nailer, who is producing ‘consistently good calves in the herd’, and is out of the Cleenagh Flasher daughter Haystar Wonder 6.
Judge Cara Moore
Of the overall show, and her day judging, Cara Moore went on to say: “I was delighted to be asked to judge this increasingly high profile calf show. There was a fantastic turnout of calves which is a great credit to the NI breeders and to the work and efforts of the NI Simmental Club.”
Craigy Paddington Reserve Senior Champion
Back in the seniors and lifting the Reserve Senior Championship was the winner of the day’s first class in the shape of the November 2023 born bull Craigy Paddington from Mr WJ Dodd, Saintfield, Ballynahinch, Co Down. This calf is another by Saltire Impressive and is out of the heterozygous polled Craigy Jessica K2 (P), a Keeldrum Fabregas 14 daughter. With a bit of a track record behind him, Craigy Paddington has met with no little success through 2024. In his first time out at Armagh Show in June he took the Simmental Male Champion at only seven-months-old. The following month he stood as Reserve Overall Simmental at Castlewellan, and on the back of these successes he also qualified for The Northern Ireland Shows competition, Young Bull of the Year for 2024. The Dodd’s plan to offer him for sale sell him at a sale in the Spring of next year if not sold privately prior to that.
Ballinalare Farm Ritz Reserve Junior Champion
Taking the Reserve Junior Championship was the winner of the day’s final class and in the shape of Ballinalare Farm Ritz from the 65-breeding-female herd of Joe & Alan Wilson, Dorans Hill, Newry, Co Down. May 2024 born this young heifer is the first calf shown by the imported Bighill Magic who was purchased by the Wilson’s for €11,000 from Rosscommon in October 2021. She is out of Ballinalare Farm Ladybird, a Denizes Fantastic 14 daughter, whose first calf Polly, was sold at the herd’s recent Production Sale for 4900gns. Still on her mother, it is very much hoped that Ritz, described as a ‘lovely, sweet female, with a good square back end, length, and plenty of style’, will be the herd’s main show heifer in 2025.
Further success for the Craigy herd came in the All-Breeds Young Handlers section when brothers, and prolific young handler winners, Lewis and Jamie Dodd, won their respective classes for eight to twelve year old, and thirteen to sixteen year old. Prolific competitors and winners, both boys ‘ love working with cattle, both the daily aspects and the showing, and they love attending the Young Handler events at the local shows’! Winning the seventeen to nineteen years of age class was Russell Kelly. Commenting, the Young Handlers judge, Molly Bradley said: “It was great to see so many young handlers being very professional in the ring, competitive, and keen to learn. Well done to all.”

It’s another massive tip of the hat to James Alexander, Randalstown, who sold his heifer, the day’s Simmental Champion, for £7800, at the Royal Ulster Beef & Lamb Championship on Tuesday 26th November. The £7,800 figure is a Simmental record at what was the seventh staging of this event, held in the Logan Hall at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, Lisburn, and with the quality and auction prices of beef cattle, calves and lambs, described as being ‘off the chart’. Great to see Simmentals right in the thick of the top prices!
£7,800 ‘Katie’, 2024 Simmental Champion at the 2024 Royal Ulster Premier Beef and Lamb Championships, from James Alexander, Jalex, Randalstown. Pictured with Katie is Cormac O’Kane.
The stand out Simmental heifer, Katie, who was given the breed’s Overall Championship & Heifer Championship, weighed in at 724kgs. October 2022 born, Katie is sired by Edenbann Lionheart bred by NI breeder Nevin Smith, Garvagh, Coleraine. Come sale time this heifer was knocked down at £7,800, or £10.77 per kg, to Messrs Campbell, Co Antrim.
Prolific winners at the Royal Ulster Beef & Lamb Championships, this was a ‘four-peat’ with it being the fourth year in a row that the high profile Jalex herd, noted for breeding and selling high quality replacement heifers, has won the Simmental Championship.

The Reserve Champion Simmental title, and Reserve Champion Heifer, was awarded to Shauna McKenna from Clougher. Her December 2023 born heifer weighed in at 524kgs and went on to sell for £2,800.
Judge for the day was the well-known and experienced man in the middle, Arfon Jones from North Wales. Well done to all the Simmental exhibitors!

- 28,000gns Kilbride Farm bull a joint NI Simmental record
- Top price also the record for a homozygous polled bull
- 19 bulls sell at 7000gns and over
- 49 bulls sold through the ring to £7434
The homozygous polled bull Kilbride Farm Prince 23 (PP) from WH Robson & Sons, Doagh, Ballyclare, sold for 28,000gns to lead the Simmental trade, and take the all-breeds top price, at United Auctions, Stirling on Monday 21st October. The 28,000gns, which is the top all-breeds price at Stirling this year, is also a joint record for a Northern Irish Simmental bull.
Sale top price, and Reserve Intermediate Champion, Kilbride Farm Prince 28,000gns in the pre-sale show the previous day, this April 2023 born bull had stood as Reserve Intermediate Champion under the judge, Neil McIlwaine of the noted Corrick herd, Newtonstewart, Co Tyrone, after having been placed first in his class.
Newly elected BSCS President Chris Martindale, left, with judge Neil McIlwaine
Combining visual, pedigree, and performance, Kilbride Farm Prince 23 (PP) is entirely homebred being by Kilbride Farm Jetstream 18 (P), and out of Kilbride Farm Fanni 68J (P), a Kilbride Farm Gruffalo daughter. With terrific performance figures, Prince 23 (PP) had a top 1% Maternal (Milk) figure of +13, the joint highest in the catalogue, and top 5% figures for growth and Terminal, and top 10% for Self-Replacing. Come sale time this bull quickly went through the sale gears before being knocked down to the 80-cow Denizes herd of MA Barlow & Sons, Four Oaks, Nr Leyland, Lancashire. Commenting afterwards John Barlow said: “This is just a tremendous bull in himself and the best homozygous polled bull we’ve seen. He just ticked so many boxes having a ‘wow factor’ in himself, but having the figures and pedigree to match, and of course being polled, a trait which there is increasing demand for. We’d seen his picture on Facebook and we liked him even more when we saw him in the flesh. From here we’ll look to use him on Denizes Hamish daughters, and in time Corskie Nugget daughters, but we’re excited to have him and to see his progeny in due course.”
For the noted 100 cow Kilbride Farm herd, who over the years have had numerous high prices, and seven Overall Supremes at both Perth and Stirling, it was a top price for the herd to date eclipsing the 22,000gns for Kilbride Farm Foreman in 2016, and of course a joint record for a Simmental bull from Northern Ireland. Speaking on behalf of the Kilbride Farm team, Norman Robson who was on the same weekend the outgoing President of the British Simmental Cattle Society after a two year term, said: “Having introduced the polled gene slowly, and at the same time maintaining the qualities that the herd is known for, it has been a goal for some 30 years to breed a homozygous polled bull of this quality. We’re delighted with the sale today and hope Kilbride Farm Prince 23 (PP) goes on to breed well in his new home.” The sire of Prince 23 (PP), Kilbride Farm Jetstream 18 (P), has previously bred bulls to 13,000gns x 2, and in 2023 was the Male Champion in the Society’s popular Virtual Show.
The sale itself saw 49 bulls sold through the ring, and 53 in all, to average £7434. Six bulls made over five figures, and nineteen in total were sold at 7,000gns or more. The top price aside, the sale was dominated by commercial producers competing for the first quality bulls of their choice. Speaking after the sale, the incoming BSCS President Chris Martindale who runs the noted Forsdale herd at Coedfa, Oswestry, Shropshire said: “There continues to be a real confidence in the Simmental breed at present, and it’s great to see the strength in the sale today again being driven by commercial producers. With a focus on efficiency, added value, and performance, the Simmental maternal traits of milk, easy calving, fertility, temperament, and producing growthy, easy fleshing calves year on year, are a foundation benchmark that producers are very much looking for in their suckler herds. We would of course have liked to have seen more bulls sold today but the numbers are perhaps reflective of where these backend sales are at present and with the pressures we’re seeing on cow numbers in the industry generally.”
Overall Supreme Champion, and Senior Champion, Popes Premier 15,000gns
There was a huge ringside roar when Popes Premier was tapped out, and led by Jimmy Wood!
Selling at 15,000gns was the pre-sale Overall Supreme Champion in the shape of Popes Premier 23 from Jimmy & Vikki Wood, Dutton, Preston. Having won Class Two, followed by the Senior Championship, this January 2023 born bull literally raised the roof with a huge ringside roar of approval from the packed ringside crowd greeting the ‘judges tap’ in what was a hugely popular win and a special moment for Jimmy and Vikki at ringside, and the Wood family.
A bit of a theme at the sale, Popes Premier is again entirely homebred being by Popes Lethal Weapon and out of the multi title show winning, Popes Princess Immie, whose grand dam is the herd’s famous show cow, Popes Princess Cleo. In his own right last year, Popes Premier 23 won the Simmental Pedigree Calf Championship and National Pedigree Calf Show Interbreed, at the English Winter Fair. This year he won the Male Championship and Reserve Overall to his stablemate Popes Princess Noor, at the 2024 Great Yorkshire Show, and was Reserve Male Champion at the 2024 Simmental English National Show held within the Royal Lancashire. Commenting on his Overall Champion, the judge Neil McIlwaine said: “This bull in my mind is a high end breeder’s bull. He just stood out with his power, length and super locomotion. In prime condition he had great lines throughout, was full of breed character and showed himself so well on good legs. He’s one of the best Simmental bulls I’ve seen at Stirling.”
Going commercially, Popes Premier 23 was purchased by the noted Islay Estates, Bridgend, Isle of Islay. Islay Estates runs an extensive in-hand farming operation over a large area of the Estate. The farming practices and livestock on the ground vary as the land and topography ultimately dictate what is possible. Livestock are reared naturally on the hill and on the in-bye land, where they graze all year round.
Of winning the Supreme Championship and the Stirling Sale, Vikki Wood said: “It’s been an emotional weekend and we’re over the moon to have won the pre-sale show. Premier has been such an honest calf from day one, just a lovely bull to work with and a perfect gent. Sunday was very much the icing on the cake with him! We very much wish Islay Estates all the best with him”.
Junior Champion Islavale Private 12,500gns
Bringing another top team of bulls to Stirling was the prolific Islavale herd of WS Stronach & Son, Berryleys Farm, Grange, Keith, who sold seven in all to gross £64,050, and average a mighty £9150. Included within that was the winner of the last class of the day and the Junior Champion, Islavale Private 23 who made 12,500gns when selling to Ayrshire and the commercial producer JH Logan & Co, Dalfask Farm, Girvan. Continuing the theme, this May 2023 born bull is entirely homebred being by Islavale Lucifer 20 EX93 and is out of Islavale Keely EX 91. Speaking afterwards Michael Logan said:
“I hadn’t gone to the sale necessarily with the intention of buying and was actually running a wee bit late. But looking at the bulls beforehand this bull just really caught my eye. He had tremendous length and is a really strong, powerful bull for his age. We’ve purchased from Islavale previously and the bulls have done really well so we’re happy again to pay the price for a bull of this quality.” Islavale Private will be used in the Dalfask commercial herd which comprises of purebred Simmentals, Simmental x Salers, and Lim x Friesians.
In addition to the 12,500gns price further Islavale bulls made 11,000gns, 9500gns, 9000gns x 2, 6000gns, and 4000gns. Both the Junior Championship and Intermediate Championship was secured, along with the Reserve Overall, and with the herd also picking up the Group of Three award. The Junior Champion prize marked the fifth in a row the herd has won this title at February and October Stirling Sales. Another fantastic ‘day at the office’! The herd’s three top prices were all sired by the homebred Islavale Lucifer 20 EX93, his first sons at Stirling, and described as the best son of Corskie Highlander the herd has bred. This bull was also the sire of Islavale Peaches the Weaned Calf Champion at the 2023 Next Gen Sale who made 9000gns. Commenting generally on the day, Stewart Stronach said: “We’re very pleased with the day and to see a retained stock bull get on so well with his first progeny at Stirling. In terms of the bulls our aim remains to produce bulls from strong maternal lines that are not too extreme, with good growth figures and milk, that have length, good tops, and are square over their plates.”
Innerwick Phoenix 12,000gns
Selling at 12,000gns was Innerwick Phoenix 23 from Mr & Mrs L Moffat, Innerwick Farm, Dunbar, East Lothian. At the pre-sale show this April 2023 bull had stood second in his class to the Intermediate & Overall Reserve Champion. Sired by Greencap Jaeger 18, who was purchased by the Moffat’s from Stirling in October 2019, and who was Junior Male, Overall Junior, and Reserve Male Champion at the Royal Highland Show 2019, Innerwick Phoenix 23 is out of Innerwick Gazelle, a Lambclose Bacchus daughter. With good Terminal and Self replacing Indexes, this bull went north when purchased by W&J Brown, Hilton of Culsh, New Deer, Turriff.
Intermediate Champion and Reserve Overall Supreme Islavale Popeye 11,000gns
The Intermediate Champion and Reserve Overall Supreme was another from the Islavale team and in the shape of Islavale Popeye 23. This April 2023 born bull is another by Islavale Lucifer 20 EX93 and is out of the second calver Islavale Keepsake (ET) VG 87. Making 11,000gns this bull was purchased by repeat buyer A& J Craig, Craigton, Castle Douglas who run 380 Simmental cross cows. Commenting, Stephen Williamson the herd manager said: “We’re delighted to get this bull and who has very good milk figures. We’ve purchased previously from Islavale and the bulls have gone on to leave a very strong base of cows in the herd.” Of his Overall reserve Champion the judge Neil McIlwaine said: “This was another terrific bull. Again he had plenty of power with great lines to him, width through the top, and depth through into his hindquarters. He moved extremely well and is a quality bull that could do both jobs.”
Kilbride Farm President 10,000gns
Following on from their top price sale, the Robson family were back in the money when selling the heterozygous polled bull Kilbride Farm President 23 (P) for 10,000gns to J Lawrie, Newton of Arbirlot, Arbroath, Angus. This April 2023 born bull is sired by the herd’s new stock bull Hiltonstown Lachlan, who is ‘breeding very well’ in the herd and is out of a Sneumgaard Imperator (PP) daughter, K F Eunice 245I (P), who has already bred Kilbride Farm Lancer (P), the Reserve Junior Champion at Stirling in February 2022. Another bull with top performance figures, Kilbride Farm President (P) is in the top 1% for Self-Replacing Index; top 5% for growth, and Terminal Index, and top 10% for milk.
Islavale Perseus 9500gns
Back to the Islavale pen and the March 2023 born Islavale Perseus made 9500gns when selling to the pedigree and commercial Garrison herd of DJ Cleland, Glebe Farm, Hereford. With both parents classified EX93, this bull again by Islavale Lucifer 20 EX93, and out of Islavale Dream EX93, carried a joint top Maternal (Milk) figure of +13, and with Self replacing and Terminal Indexes in the top 5%, and top 1% respectively. Commenting afterwards Mr Cleland said: “We run 340 Simmental and Charolais crosses but with the aim to increase the Simmental influence. We were looking for a bull with good breeding behind him, performance figures, and who was darker in colour. This bull had all of that and a tremendous length and power to him. He’ll be used in due course within both our commercial and pedigree herds.”
Quarryhill Pablo 9000gns
Four bulls in all made 9000gns and the first of the was the winner of class three, Quarryhill Pablo 23 from Geoff & Kate Anderson, Wester Greens Farm, Lossiemouth. In September 2022, Geoff & Kate purchased Annick Desiree’s Joy EX 90, and her heifer calf at foot, for a combined 12,500gns. In calf to Kilbride Farm Karl 19 (P), Quarryhill Pablo 23 is the resulting calf. A good muscled bull with positive calving figures, this bull was bought by noted commercial producers J R Graham & Ptnrs, Greenshields, Biggar, Lanarkshire.
Delfur Pegasus 9000gns
Second prize in the same class, and again at 9000gns was the heterozygous polled bull Delfur Pegasus 23 (P) from Delfur Farms, Rothes, Aberlour. This March 2023 born calf is by Woodhall Instinct 17, and out of Delfur Joy, an Islavale Cassius daughter. Another bull to go south, and to be used on both pedigree and commercial cows, Delfur Pegasus 23 was purchased by JW Gosmore & Partners, who run the Newton House herd of 120 head in all at Newton House Farm, Chester. Of Delfur Pegasus John Gosmore said: “I was looking for a bull with conformation and to use in our suckler herd of Simmental Limousin crosses, and also with the quality for the pedigree herd. This bull has the shape, has good feet and legs, walked extremely well, and looks to have a very good temperament which is important to us.”
Islavale Preston 9000gns
Islavale Pepe 9000gns
Two bulls from Islavale made 9000gns. The first at this mark was the March 2023 born Islavale Preston. This bull is Coose Lincoln, who has bred sons to 13,000gns, and is out of Islavale Glee. With a top 15% Calving Ease figure of +3.2, this bull was purchased by J Anderson & Son, Headshaw, Lauder, Berwickshire, for their predominantly Simmental herd of 135 suckler cows. Speaking afterwards James Anderson said: “We picked this bull out at the pre-sale show and are really pleased to have got him. He’s very correct, had a good top line, width and shape, and walked very well. With a good head and breed character, he just had a presence to him and he’s got good figures as well. The Simmental breed as a whole have very good maternal traits, are milky and make good mothers. This bull will go into the suckler herd for those qualities and to breed replacements for the future”. The final bull at the 9000gns mark was the third prize winner Islavale Pepe 23. March 2023 born, this bull is by Curaheen Giant, who has had sons up to 16,000gns, and is out of Islavale Ashley 7 GP84. This bull was bought by Robert Bell & Partners, Craigo, Milnathort, Kinross.
Reserve Supreme Champion Corskie Pot 8500gns
Standing second in his class to the Overall Supreme Champion and Senior Champion, and who himself was Reserve Senior Champion on the day, was Corskie Pot 23, from Mr WJ & J Green, Corskie, Garmouth, Fochabers. This January 2023 born bull is by Rathnashan Kellogg’s EX 94, and is out of Corskie Kettle EX 90. Purchasing Corskie Pot 23 was commercial producer W A Wilson, Hutlerburn, Ettrick, Selkirk. Rathnashan Kellogg’s EX94 has had progeny sell to date up to 9500gns at Stirling, and has sired the Overall Junior Champion at the Royal Highland, and the Reserve Male at this year’s Highland and Simmental Scottish National Shows. In addition to the 85000gns price, Corskie sold eight bulls on the day and with other prices including 7000gns, 6500gns x2, and 5500gns.
Scotland Hill Peter 8500gns
Up from Doncaster, Tom Hill, Mill Farm, Wadworth made 8500gns when selling the shapely Scotland Hill Peter 23 to Caithness and W M Barnetson & Sons, Lynegar Farm, Wick. April 2023 born, Scotland Hill Peter 23 is Clonagh Mighty Ab Fab, a Manor Park Hansome son, and is out of Scotland Hill Ivonne, a Glenturk Extra Special daughter.
Reserve Junior Champion Pitmudie Princeton
Winning class nine and taking the Reserve Junior Championship was the stylish Pitmudie Princeton 23 from Heather Duff, Pitmudie Farm, Menmuir, Brechin. April 2023 born, Pitmudie Princeton is by Hiltonstown Irish 17, and is out of Pitmudie Babe from the herd’s noted Manor Park Babe line. With a show track record behind him, through the summer this bull won the Reserve Beefbreeder Interbreed title at the Royal Highland and was Reserve Overall Junior Champion at the Simmental Scottish National Show. Hiltonstown Irish 17, was purchased at Stirling in October 2018 for 8500gns. Come sale time this bull was bid to 8500gns, not quite meeting the reserve, and with the Duffs thinking so much of him that he has been retained for use in the Pitmudie herd.

- Five animals make 5000gns and over
- Ranfurly maiden heifers average £4646
- Joint sale grosses £128, 416
There was a strong demand for Simmental females with prices reaching a top of 8,000gns at the fourth joint production sale from the noted Ballinalare Farm herd of Joe & Alan Wilson, Newry, County Down, and the noted Ranfurly herd of David & Jonny Hazelton, Dungannon, Tyrone.
The sale took place at Rathfriland Farmers’ Co-op on Saturday 7th September and attracted strong interest from breeders throughout the UK and Ireland with lots selling to buyers in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, and with exports to the Republic of Ireland.
Ranfurly Weikel 52nd topped the joint production sale at 8,000gns.
Topping the trade at 8,000gns was the much-admired show heifer Ranfurly Weikel 52nd from David and Jonny Hazelton’s 20-cow Ranfurly herd. This fifteen-month-old heifer was sired by the home-bred Auchorachan ACDC son, Ranfurly Limelight, the reserve intermediate champion at Stirling in October 2022 and which sold for 16,000gns. Her dam Ranfurly Weikel 18th is by Raceview King and was female and reserve supreme champion at the NI Simmental Club’s National Show in 2019.
Auctioneer David Lowry in the rostrum at Rathfriland Farmers’ Co-op.
Ranfurly Weikel 52nd is bred from three generations of EX cows. She was junior champion at the NI Four Breeds Calf Show in 2023; reserve junior champion at Balmoral in May 2024 and a first prize winner at the National Show, held in Antrim. This heifer came under the hammer of guest auctioneer David Lowry, and was sold to John Warnock’s Templefyn Herd based at Carrowdore in County Down.
Ranfurly Weikel 47th came under the hammer at 6,000gns.
Two heifers shared the day’s second highest bid of 6,000gns. First to sell was the January 2022 born in-calf heifer Ranfurly Weikel 47th. Sired by Samark Superman, she was bred from the Raceview King daughter, Ranfurly Weikel 33rd VG87 – a maternal sister to Auchorachan ACDC and the 15,000gns Ranfurly Formula One – supreme champion at Stirling in October 2015. In-calf to Clonagh Tiger Gallant and due in February 2025, she sold to the Bowhill Herd owned by David Smith and Rachael Reid from Low Bowhill Farm, Newmiln, Ayrshire.
Ranfurly Stella 15th shared a joint price of 6,000gns.
Also selling at 6,000gns was the November 2022 born Ranfurly Stella 15th ET, a Woodhall Ferrari daughter, bred from Raceview Fancywinty 652 ET EX93. She sold to pedigree breeder John Byrne from Ballinaskeagh, Banbridge.
The Woodhall Ferrari daughter Ranfurly Stella 16th came under the hammer at the herd’s joint 4th production sale.
Her full sister, Ranfurly Stella 16 ET, born in February 2023, sold to James Mullan’s Carrowcladagh Herd in Garvagh for 5,200gns.
These ET heifers are maternal sisters Ranfurly Stella 12th who was reserve supreme champion at Balmoral Show in 2022; and Ranfurly Stella 13th sold at the Next Gen sale in Carlisle for 5,000gns. Maternal brothers, Ranfurly Jackpot sold at Stirling in February 2020 for 9,000gns; while her full ET brother Ranfurly Nunez sold privately to the Fairhurst Herd.
The April 2023 heifer Ranfurly Weikel 51 attracted a bid of 5,000gns, selling to John Moore’s Omorga Herd at Beragh, County Tyrone. She was sired by the Team Celtic son, Ranfurly Masterpiece – sold at Stirling last year for 6,200gns. Her dam is the Raceview King daughter, Ranfurly Weikel 23rd VG86, reserve female champion at the 2019 NI National Simmental Show.
Ballinalare Farm Polly came under the hammer at 4,900gns.
Leading Joe Wilson’s Ballinalare Farm line-up at 4,900gns was the January 2023 born Ballinalare Farm Polly. Sired by the Carnkern Titan son, Curaheen Wakeman, she is out of Ballinalare Farm Ladybird, who is a daughter of the herd’s 10,000gns stock bull Denizes Fantastic. Buyers were Messrs P and R Murtagh from Newry.
Next best at 4,600gns and also selling to John Byrne from Banbridge, was the April 2023 Ranfurly Beauty 18th. This one is by the Team Celtic son, Ranfurly Klinker – sold privately to the Boyerstown in ROI and widely available through AI. Her dam, Ranfurly Beauty 10th EX90, is a Samark Superman daughter bred from Ranfurly Beauty 8th ET.
The October 2022 Ranfurly Kleeb 47th sold for 4,300gns to the Dodd family, William, Jane, Jamie and Lewis, for their Craigy Herd at Saintfield. Sired by Curaheen Bandit, she is bred from the Whitemire King Kong daughter, Ranfurly Kleeb 32nd EX92 – who will be twelve-years-old in November and has reared 12 calves, including three sets of twins.
Next best at 4,200gns was Ranfurly Weikel 50th, a March 2023 Ranfurly Limelight daughter, bred from Ranfurly Weikel 33rd VG87. She sold for export to online bidder Simon Powell, owner of the Burlane Herd based at Shrewsbury in Shropshire.
Ten-month-old heifer Ballinalare Farm Paris ET sold for 4,200
Also selling at 4,200gns was Joe Wilson’s Ballinalare Farm Paris ET. Born in November 2023, she is by Kilbride Farm Bantry and bred from Ballinalare Farm Evita – a daughter of the 20,000gns Perth champion, Auchorachan Wizard. This heifer is a full sister to the 28,000gns Stirling supreme champion and NI-record price bull Ballinalare Farm Masterpiece. Buyers were David Smith and Rachael Reid for their Bowhill Herd.
Pat Kelly, and son Frank, from the Ashland Herd in Tempo, County Fermanagh, paid 4,100gns to secure the eight-month-old Ranfurly Weikel 53rd ET. Sired by Salisbury Challenger, she is bred from the noted South Park King Kong Weikel 2nd EX93.
Next best at 4,000gns was Ballinalare Farm Princess, a February 2023 born heifer by the €11,000 Roscommon junior champion, Bighill Magic. She was the first daughter to be offered for sale from the €11,500 Lissadell Krystal Special. Buyers were Kieran and Delia Fitzpatrick, owners of the Birtrees Herd based at Rathfriland, County Down.
The Ranfurly Herd offered two seventeen-month-old bulls for sale. First into the ring was Ranfurly Principal who won a number of championship awards during the show season, including the interbreed beef honours at Clogher Show. This one is by Ranfurly Limelight and bred from the Raceview King daughter, Ranfurly Weikel 13th EX90. He failed to meet his reserve and is destined for Stirling in October.
The home-bred Ranfurly Limelight was also behind the breeding of Ranfurly Powerhouse who came under the hammer at 4,000gns, selling to Cameron and Rachel Jackson for their Future Livestock Herd at Galston in Ayrshire.
A much-anticipated star of the catalogue was the multi-award-winning show heifer Ballinalare Farm Nikita, a February 2022 Saltire Impressive daughter bred from Ballinalare Farm Ilyssa. She has enjoyed overwhelming success in the showring, winning RUAS Balmoral Show and NI Simmental National Show supreme champion two years in succession, as well as a number of interbreed honours. Bidding reached 10,000gns which fell short of the Wilson family’s expectations and this heifer returned home unsold.

Some forty eight young members from seven regions across Scotland, England, and Wales, with visitors also from the Irish Simmental Cattle Breeders Club, travelled to Northern Ireland to compete in this fun and prestigious competition.
The stock judging finals were held at Kilbride Farm, Doagh, home of WH Robson and Family and the Kilbride Farm Simmental herd and with there being four classes to be assessed by the young judges, followed by giving reasons. The four classes were:

There were 48 competitors across three categories: Under 21 (Junior), 21-30 (Senior) and the same for international guests. All judges competed as individuals but were also paired with another judge within their age category and their scores were combined as an overall team result. There was an open competition for other competitors and family members which was also highly contested.
Master Judge for the event was Iain Green of Corskie Simmentals, Garmouth. His role involved adjudicating the reasoning element for all 48 young judges along with timekeeper, Shane McDonald.
In addition to the stock judging competition, judges and visitors enjoyed a farm tour around the Kilbride Farm Simmental Herd where there was an impressive show of young bulls, breeding females and young stock. The afternoon was followed by an evening of socialising and a hog roast before the announcement of results.

- Ranfurly Principal P12 Wins Overall Reserve, Male Champion & Junior Champion, and the Beef Stakes Interbreed
- Dermody Princess 2 takes Simmental Reserve Female Championship
- Coolcran Pharaoh 23 wins Simmental Reserve Male Championship
The all-conquering heifer Ballinalare Farm Nikita, from Joe & Alan Wilson, Dorans Hill, Newry, Co Down, continued her trophy laden show career when winning the 2024 NI Simmental National Show, held within the Randox Antrim Show, at Shanes Castle, Randalstown Road on Saturday 27th July.
Ballinalare Farm Nikita Overall Supreme & Female Champion
This latest win for the February 2022 born heifer saw her retain her NI Simmental National Show title that she won last year, and followed on from her win at the 2024 RUAS Balmoral Show in May, which was also a defence of that title. This double-double is thought to be a first for a Simmental in Northern Ireland.
Ballinalare Farm Nikita, who is sired by the 14,000gns Saltire Impressive is out of Ballinalare Farm Ilyssa whose Granddam is a full sister of the noted Ballinalare Farm Nightrider.
Judge for the day was Jim Goldie of the noted Newbiemains herd at Annan, Dumfries and who commented on his Champion: “This heifer is just naturally very wide. She has power and is in good condition, and is very feminine with it. Just a terrific representative of the Simmental breed.” Later in the day Ballinalare Farm Nikita, who is in-calf to Omorga Murray, placed Overall Reserve in the Individual Interbreed judged by John Finlay, Blackcraigs, Castle Douglas.
Judge Jim Goldie
Speaking afterwards a delighted Joe Wilson said: “Ballinalare Farm Nikita is just a special heifer but we could never have imagined winning both the RUAS Balmoral and NI Simmental National titles in consecutive years. It’s a great honour to have done so and against such a high standard of animals.”
On 7th September the Ballinalare herd is having an export sale at Rathfriland with around 25 head for sale including full embryo siblings to Ballinalare Farm Nikita, and also to the 28,000gns Banhill Farm Masterpiece. Also selling on the same day will be 20 breeding females, including fifteen heifers, from the Ranfurly herd of David and Jonny Hazelton, Cohannon House, Dungannon. With more than a little symmetry therefore it was the Ranfurly herd who took the Reserve Overall, Male, and Junior Championship titles with their young bull Ranfurly Principal P12 who will also feature in the sale in September.
Ranfurly Principal Reserve Overall, Male Champion, Junior Champion
Entirely homebred, Ranfurly Principal 12 23 is an AI calf by Ranfurly Limelight L11 20, who was sold for 16,000gns at Stirling in February 2022, and is out of the Raceview King daughter Ranfurly Weikel 13th EH17 EX90. Further progeny from Ranfurly Limelight L11 20 will also be for sale in September. Ranfurly Principal 12 arrived at Antrim with a good show pedigree behind him having stood second in his class to the Male Champion at the 2024 RUAS Balmoral Show, and having been Male Champion and Reserve Supreme at Omagh Show. Of this April 2023 born calf the judge Jim Goldie said: “This is a really stylish calf, again with natural width, shape and conformation. He’s a modern bull that will continue to improve and develop and with a good future ahead of him.” Later in the show Ranfurly Principal 12 powered on to win the Pedigree Beef Bull Stakes for all pedigree bulls in show, born on or after 1st January 2023, and judged by Raymond Irvine, Banffshire.
Dermody Princess 2 Reserve Female Champion
Standing Reserve Female Champion to the Overall Supreme was another stylish heifer in the shape of Dermody Princess 2 from JL & CJ Weatherup, Ballyclare, Co Antrim. Bred by Mr N Jagoe, this September 2002 heifer by Saltire Impressive and out of Dermody Kandy, a Glebedale Tyson daughter, was purchased by the Weatherups at Roscommon for €9200. In May this year Dermody Princess 2 stood Reserve Female Champion at the 2024 RUAS Balmoral Show and again to Ballinalare Farm Nikita. She was AI’d some six weeks ago to Raceview King and will now go out to grass within the herd’s 35 breeding females. Commenting on his Reserve Female the judge said: This is a lovely stretchy, deep ribbed heifer with a tremendous body. I have no doubt she will continue to develop and go on and make a first class breeding female.”
Coolcran Pharaoh Reserve Male Champion & Overall Reserve Junior
Taking the Reserve Male Championship and Overall Reserve Junior Championship was the stylish October 2023 born Coolcran Pharaoh 23 from Shane & Paul McDonald, Coolcran, Tempo, Co Fermanagh. This calf is by Islavale Miami, and is out of Coolcran Cinderella’s Gucci, an Ashland Brandy daughter, who shares the same maternal line as the 26,000gns Coolcran Heidi’s Noreen. Of his Reserve Male Champion Jim Goldie said: This young bull had a really nice length and stretch to him and had a super, breedy head. Well proportioned, with good feet and legs, he walked extremely well and has every potential to go on to make a pedigree bull.” Enjoying a strong show Pharaoh’s stablemate, and class winner, Coolcran Peroni won the Bull Performance for the bull, born on or after 1st January 2023, scoring highest points combining Self Replacing Index and Physical Attributes. July 2023 born, Coolcran Peroni is also by Islavale Miami, and is out of the Carnkern Titan daughter Ranfurly Weikel 38th L5 (ET), who was purchased at the Ranfurly Production Sale herd in 2020. Coolcran Peroni has a Self-Replacing Index of +128 putting him in the breed’s top 5%, and with a Maternal (Milk) figure of +14, a breed top 1% figure for this trait. Both Pharaoh and Peroni are from the first crop of calves by the herd stock bull Islavale Miami 21 purchased privately in the summer of 2022.
Coolcran Precious Royalbeauty Heifer Performance Winner
For good measure Coolcran Precious Royal Beauty then won the heifer performance recorded class, awarded to the heifer, born on or after 1st January 2022, scoring the highest points combining Self Replacing Index and physical attributes. September 2023 born this heifer is by Coolcran Maximus 21, who is now the stock bull within Heather Duff’s Pitmudie herd in Scotland, and is out of Raceview Farah Royal (ET).
Hosted by the Northern Ireland Simmental Breeder’s Club, the NI Simmental National Show was also a part of the programme of events attended by British Simmental Young Members as part of a weekend that saw them have a National Stockjudging at the Kilbride farm herd of WH Robson & Sons, plus herd visits to the Ballinalare herd of Joe & Alan Wilson, Dorans Hill, Newry, Co Down, and the Hiltonstown herd of Richard & Rhys Rodgers, Portglenone, Co Antrim.
