• Lisglass Heifer wins Senior Championship
• Haystar Revolver lifts the Junior Championship
Northern Ireland Simmental breeders were out in force at the fourth staging of the NI Club’s Annual Calf Show held on Saturday 30th November, at Ballymena Livestock Market. Fourteen breeders from around the province exhibited with a catalogue of close on fifty calves, and with strong support for the young handler classes. The event is held within the 4 Breed Calf Show that in addition to the Simmental breed, comprises of classes from the British Blue; British Blonde; and Saler breeds respectively.
Judge for the day was Cara Moore from Beragh ,Co Tyrone who farms at home with her parents John and Diane on their family farm, breeding pedigree Simmentals under the noted Omorga Simmental prefix. In the Young Handlers section, the judge for the day was Molly Bradley of the Dernasigh Herd, Armagh, Co Armagh.
Dermody Royal Lucy Senior Champion
Winning the first female class of the day and going on to take the Senior Championship was Dermody Royal Lucy from the Lisglass herd of JL & CJ Weatherup, Ballyclare, Co Antrim. This September 2023 heifer, purchased in August at the Reduction Sale of Irish breeder Mr N Jagoe, is by the prolific Saltire Impressive and is out of Dermody Lucy 2, a Dermotstown Delboy (ET) EX 92 daughter. Commenting, the judge Cara Moore said: “My choice of Senior Champion just caught my eye immediately she came into the ring. She’s a very stylish, correct heifer and had great power.” In her class, Dermody Royal Lucy got the nod ahead of her stablemate Lisglass Panache, an October 2023 born Omorga Volvo daughter.
Lisglass Ruby
It was a strong day’s showing for the 35-cow Lisglass herd who also took a red ticket in the second heifer class with the February 2024 born Lisglass Ruby, a Mullynock Gallant 15 (ET) daughter. Ruby is a sister of Lisglass Primrose, who had a successful show season in 2023, and who herself is aimed at being a part of next year’s show team.
Haystar Revolver Junior Champion
In the Juniors it was a Championship win for ‘top gun’ Haystar Revolver from G Hayes & Son, Upper Ballinderry, Lisburn, Co Antrim. This April 2024 born bull calf is sired by Lissadell Nailer, and is the second daughter out of Raceview Lively HW Nicolet, by Clonagh Tiger Gallant, and who was purchased from a Raceview reduction sale. Of her Junior Champion, Haystar Revolver, Cara Moore said: “I thought this Junior Champion was just a super calf with plenty of shape and who moved extremely well.” Revolver is due to be weaned in the next month and forward plans include aiming him for next year’s NI Simmental National Show, and beyond that possibly the 2025 Stirling October Sale. Again in a strong class of ten calves, it was a one-two for the 15-cow Haystar herd with Haystar Round One taking second place. May 2024 born, this calf is another by Lissadell Nailer, who is producing ‘consistently good calves in the herd’, and is out of the Cleenagh Flasher daughter Haystar Wonder 6.
Judge Cara Moore
Of the overall show, and her day judging, Cara Moore went on to say: “I was delighted to be asked to judge this increasingly high profile calf show. There was a fantastic turnout of calves which is a great credit to the NI breeders and to the work and efforts of the NI Simmental Club.”
Craigy Paddington Reserve Senior Champion
Back in the seniors and lifting the Reserve Senior Championship was the winner of the day’s first class in the shape of the November 2023 born bull Craigy Paddington from Mr WJ Dodd, Saintfield, Ballynahinch, Co Down. This calf is another by Saltire Impressive and is out of the heterozygous polled Craigy Jessica K2 (P), a Keeldrum Fabregas 14 daughter. With a bit of a track record behind him, Craigy Paddington has met with no little success through 2024. In his first time out at Armagh Show in June he took the Simmental Male Champion at only seven-months-old. The following month he stood as Reserve Overall Simmental at Castlewellan, and on the back of these successes he also qualified for The Northern Ireland Shows competition, Young Bull of the Year for 2024. The Dodd’s plan to offer him for sale sell him at a sale in the Spring of next year if not sold privately prior to that.
Ballinalare Farm Ritz Reserve Junior Champion
Taking the Reserve Junior Championship was the winner of the day’s final class and in the shape of Ballinalare Farm Ritz from the 65-breeding-female herd of Joe & Alan Wilson, Dorans Hill, Newry, Co Down. May 2024 born this young heifer is the first calf shown by the imported Bighill Magic who was purchased by the Wilson’s for €11,000 from Rosscommon in October 2021. She is out of Ballinalare Farm Ladybird, a Denizes Fantastic 14 daughter, whose first calf Polly, was sold at the herd’s recent Production Sale for 4900gns. Still on her mother, it is very much hoped that Ritz, described as a ‘lovely, sweet female, with a good square back end, length, and plenty of style’, will be the herd’s main show heifer in 2025.
Further success for the Craigy herd came in the All-Breeds Young Handlers section when brothers, and prolific young handler winners, Lewis and Jamie Dodd, won their respective classes for eight to twelve year old, and thirteen to sixteen year old. Prolific competitors and winners, both boys ‘ love working with cattle, both the daily aspects and the showing, and they love attending the Young Handler events at the local shows’! Winning the seventeen to nineteen years of age class was Russell Kelly. Commenting, the Young Handlers judge, Molly Bradley said: “It was great to see so many young handlers being very professional in the ring, competitive, and keen to learn. Well done to all.”

It’s another massive tip of the hat to James Alexander, Randalstown, who sold his heifer, the day’s Simmental Champion, for £7800, at the Royal Ulster Beef & Lamb Championship on Tuesday 26th November. The £7,800 figure is a Simmental record at what was the seventh staging of this event, held in the Logan Hall at the Eikon Exhibition Centre, Lisburn, and with the quality and auction prices of beef cattle, calves and lambs, described as being ‘off the chart’. Great to see Simmentals right in the thick of the top prices!
£7,800 ‘Katie’, 2024 Simmental Champion at the 2024 Royal Ulster Premier Beef and Lamb Championships, from James Alexander, Jalex, Randalstown. Pictured with Katie is Cormac O’Kane.
The stand out Simmental heifer, Katie, who was given the breed’s Overall Championship & Heifer Championship, weighed in at 724kgs. October 2022 born, Katie is sired by Edenbann Lionheart bred by NI breeder Nevin Smith, Garvagh, Coleraine. Come sale time this heifer was knocked down at £7,800, or £10.77 per kg, to Messrs Campbell, Co Antrim.
Prolific winners at the Royal Ulster Beef & Lamb Championships, this was a ‘four-peat’ with it being the fourth year in a row that the high profile Jalex herd, noted for breeding and selling high quality replacement heifers, has won the Simmental Championship.
2024 Reserve Simmental Champion at the 2024 Royal Ulster Premier Beef and Lamb Championships, from Shauna McKenna, Clougher. Pictured is Declan McKenna.
The Reserve Champion Simmental title, and Reserve Champion Heifer, was awarded to Shauna McKenna from Clougher. Her December 2023 born heifer weighed in at 524kgs and went on to sell for £2,800.
Judge for the day was the well-known and experienced man in the middle, Arfon Jones from North Wales. Well done to all the Simmental exhibitors!

- Springfield Prada wins Overall Supreme & Female Champion
- Springfield Pentagon takes Overall Reserve & Male Champion
It was a ‘win double’ Gavin Brown, Springfield Farm, Penicuik who took both the Simmental Overall Supreme & Overall Reserve titles at the Scottish National Fatstock Club’s 2024 LiveScot event held at Lanark market on Friday evening, 22nd November 2024.
With similar breeding behind them, both Champion & Reserve were July 2023 born, sired by the herd’s noted stock bull Islavale Jabba 18 (ET) EX 92, and out of Shiloh Freedom daughters.
Springfield Prada, Overall Supreme Champion 2024 LiveScot
Judge for the day was Sean Mitchell, Grassknop Farm, Penrith and who duly tapped out the seventeen-month-old heifer Springfield Prada, as his Female Champion & Simmental Overall Supreme Champion. A ‘very correct heifer from great sire and dam lines,’ Prada’s full sister Springfield Neptune, took the Overall Senior Championship and Overall Reserve at the 2023 Simmental Youngstock Show held within the Borderway Agri Expo. Springfield Prada’s dam, the seven-year-old Springfield Italia, has had four heifer calves to date and with her one bull calf, Springfield Niagra, also by Islavale Jabba, selling for 8500gns at Stirling this year. Carlisle will be the next destination for Springfield Prada as she is being offered for sale at the Simmental Next Generation IV Sale of Females & Weaned Calves on 6th December.
Taking the Male Championship, and the Overall Reserve, was Prada’s stablemate in the shape of Springfield Pentagon. Again July 2023 born, Springfield Pentagon is out of another Shiloh freedom daughter, Springfield Jolene. Earlier this month, Pentagon stood second in his class to the Senior Male Champion at the Stars of the Future Calf Show. A powerful bull with plenty of length, Springfield Pentagon will now be aimed at the Stirling Simmental Bull Sale in February 2025.
May 2018 born, Islavale Jabba has been the 30-cow Springfield herd’s main sire for the previous four years, and with his progeny both bulls and heifers averaging well at sales and to a top of 8500gns. With a host of accolades to his name, Islavale Jabba has been the online European Simmental Champion, and the Senior Male Champion at the 2023 Scottish Simmental National Show. Another son, Springfield Major, was the Champion at the Simmental Calf Show at Borderway Agri Expo in 2021, and went on to sell for 7500gns at Stirling. Islavale Jabba (ET) EX 92 has since been sold for breeding to the Newbiemains pedigree herd of Jim and Patricia Goldie but with semen retained for use on farm.

DRUMCLOG, AND BOWHILL THE SIMMENTAL ‘STARS’ AT STIRLING
- Drumclog Richard takes the Junior honours
- Bowhill Petal wins Senior Championship
- Jim Goldie Jnr wins the Young Handler Championship!
First time ‘big winners’ was the name of the game at Stirling as the Bowhill and Drumclog herds, took the Simmental Championships at the prestigious Stars of the Future Calf Show held on Saturday, 9th November, at United Auctions, Stirling Agricultural Centre.
Overall Junior & Junior Male Champion Drumclog Richard
Judge for the day, John Barlow of the Denizes Herd, Four Oaks, Ulnes, Nr Leyland, Lancashire found his Overall Junior Champion, and Junior Male Champion, in the shape of the April 2024 born Drumclog Richard from Robbie Hamilton, Allanton Farm, Darvel, Ayrshire. This young bull is by Islavale Echo 2 13 EX 92, and is the first calf out of Islavale Margarita, a Wolfstar Elusive daughter. Commenting on his Junior Champion the judge John Barlow said: “What a good calf this is and he caught my eye the second he walked into the ring! The youngest in the catalogue he has good size for his age, is very calfy, and full of style and character. With a great top, and straight lines to him, he also walked extremely well. Full of potential, Drumclog Richard has every chance to go on and make a high-end breeders bull.” It was quite a debut for 23 year old Robbie Hamilton, a sheep auctioneer at United Auctions, with Drumclog Richard being his first ever Simmental calf, and his first time ever showing! Islavale Margarita was purchased privately from Stewart Stronach, Berryleys Farm, Keith and with straws of Islavale Echo 2 13 EX 92 being given as part of a luckpenny. The Drumclog herd presently comprises of three females, with a view to increasing it to ten cows in the future, and is run alongside the herd of Luings at home. From here Drumclog Richard will be used and then with a view to him being aimed at a sale thereafter.
Overall Senior & Senior Female Champion Bowhill Petal
It was a day for Ayrshire based herds with the Overall Senior Champion being Bowhill Petal from Rachael Reid, D&R Holdings, Low Bowhill Farm, Newmilns, Ayrshire.
Sired by the 26,000gns Pistyll Kingsman, who is also the sire of the record breaking 46,000gns Overhill House Neo, the September 2023 born Bowhill Petal is out of Overhill House Mary, a heifer bought at Caledonian Marts, Stirling, fundraising sale for £4000 with proceeds going to children’s charities in Ukraine. Speaking afterwards David and Rachael said: “Overhill House Mary has a lovely, quiet nature and this has rubbed off on Bowhill Petal who has been so easy to work with. This is the first year that we have been on the show scene and we’re just absolutely thrilled to win the Overall Senior Championship at an event like Stars of the Future. Bowhill Petal is definitely a keeper! The aim is to have her on the show scene next year and to go on and breed from her.”
Establishing the Bowhill prefix and joining the Society in 2023, the Bowhill herd has a base of breeding stock bought from the Overhill House herd of Richard McCulloch, and presently comprises of twelve breeding females with five in calf or near calving.
Reserve Junior Male Champion Blackford Revel 24 (P) ET
Reserve Junior Female Champion Blackford Raggiana (P) (ET)
It was a successful day for the Blackford herd of WG MacPherson (A Firm), Blackford Farm, Croy, Inverness who took the Reserve Junior titles in both the male and female sections. Placing second in his class to the Overall Junior Champion, and going on to take the Reserve title was the February 2024 born Blackford Revel 24 (P) (ET). Heterozygous polled, this calf is an embryo calf by the multi-title winning bull Heathbrow Important 17 (P) EX 93, and is out of Blackford Aero EX 92, a Kilbride Farm Strabane daughter, and whose previous progeny include the 2017 Royal Highland Simmental Champion, Blackford Galaxy. A ‘well made bull, with super conformation’, Blackford Revel 24 (P) ET will hopefully be destined for Stirling in October 2025. Taking the Reserve Junior Female title was the March 2024 born Blackford Raggiana (P) ET). Again an embryo calf sired by Heathbrow Important 17 (P) EX 93, this calf is out of Blackford Wagtail VG 86, a Kilbride Farm Strabane daughter. Blackford Wagtail’s progeny most notably includes the breed’s previous record priced bull, the 45,000gns bel Dhu Capercaillie.
Reserve Junior & Junior Female Champion Delfur Roxy
Reserve Senior Male Champion Delfur Pocket Rocket
Taking the Overall Reserve Junior Championship, and Junior Female Champion, was Delfur Roxy from Delfur Farms, Rothes, Aberlour. From a strong breeding line on both sides of the pedigree, this ten-month-old heifer is by Woodhall Instinct 17, and is out of Delfur Hells, a Clonagh Tiger gallant (ET) daughter. Woodhall Instinct has sired sons up to 16,000gns at Stirling, and Delfur Hells has been a terrific breeding female in the herd. It was another strong day for the Delfur team, and herd manager Garry Patterson, with Delfur Pocket Rocket also winning the Reserve Senior Male title. Taking the red ticket in the second class of bulls, Pocket Rocket is one of the first sons of the 28,000gns stock bull Islavale Magnum purchased at Stirling in October 2022. Described as ‘a modern type Simmental with a good top, and shape’, Delfur Pocket Rocket may be shown at LiveScot later this month before being aimed at the May Sale in Stirling next year. Prolific in the show ring, the Delfur team took the Reserve Senior Female Championship at Stars of the Future last year, and arrived at this event having won the Reserve Overall & Reserve Senior titles at the recent Simmental Youngstock Show at Carlisle.
Reserve Overall Senior & Reserve Senior Female Champion Coltfield Perfect
Winning the Reserve Senior Champion and Reserve Senior Female titles was Coltfield Perfect from the 4-breeding female herd of Cameron MacIver, Wester Coltfield, Forres, Moray. September 2023 born, Coltfield Perfect stood second in her class to the day’s Senior Champion and followed her through to take the Reserve position. This heifer, noted as being the standout from last year’s crop of Coltfield calves, first in her class at the Scottish Simmental National Show and was also first at Grantown Show. Her dam, Coltfield Katie, took Senior Female Champion at the Royal Highland Show in 2021. Coltfield Perfect is sired by Rockytop Invader who has bred very well in the herd with bulls selling 11,000gns. Moving forward, Coltfield Perfect will be put in-calf in the spring time and after calving, and all being well, will hopefully again be shown as a mature cow. Commenting generally, Cameron MacIver said: “We’ve had a great day and are delighted to win the Reserve Senior ticket. Stars of the Future is a terrific show that we like to support and it’s extremely well run. The cattle shown are just weaned, not pushed in any way, and we think it’s a real showcase for the Simmental breed.”
Senior Male Champion Newbiemains Priceless
Completing the Championship line up was the Senior Male Champion, Newbiemains Priceless from Jim & Patricia Goldie, Newbiemains Farm, Annan, Dumfriesshire. August 2023 born, Newbiemains Priceless is by Auchorachan Hercules 16 (ET) EX92, who has bred well since joining the herd in 2022, and is out of Newbiemains Lots’o’honey EX 91, a Skerrington Iceman 17 EX 95 daughter. Speaking afterwards Jim Goldie said: “We think Newbiemains Priceless is a really well-balanced bull, who walks very well, has great length and good breeding on both sides of his pedigree.” Provisional plans sees this bull being aimed at the Stirling Sale in February.
Young Handler Champion Jim Goldie
The show for the Goldie family, and Newbiemains Priceless, had started with a bang when, on the previous evening, there was a big win for Jim Goldie Junior who was crowned the show’s Overall Young Handler Champion, and won the Royal Smithfield Club trophy and clippers kindly sponsored by McCaskie’s. Through the competition, ‘wee Jim’ was handling Priceless. It was a great follow on from the Simmental Youngstock Show in the previous week at Carlisle and where Jim won the Junior Young Handler class.

- Denizes Phantom wins Senior Champion and Overall Supreme
- Reserve Overall Supreme is Delfur Phantom
- Denizes Herd wins Junior & senior Championship
- Springfield win Simmental Pairs
It was an ‘Impressive’ day for the Denizes herd of MA Barlow & Sons, Four Oaks, Ulnes, Nr Leyland, Lancashire who took a host of Championship honours at the Simmental Youngstock Show hosted by the North West Simmental Club and British Simmental Cattle Society, and held within the Borderway Agri Expo event at Carlisle on Friday 1st November.
In front of the judge for the day, Paul McDonald of the noted Coolcran herd, Tempo, Co Fermanagh, N Ireland, the 80 cow Denizes herd won both the Senior and Junior Championship before securing the Overall Supreme Championship. The sire of the Champion and both the section winners was the herd’s stock bull, and AI sire, Saltire Impressive whose progeny have sold up to 26,000gns to date.
Overall & Senior Champion Denizes Phantom
Having come through the third class of the day, and moving on to secure the Senior Championship, the day’s Overall Supreme came in the shape of the October 2023 born Denizes Phantom. Sired by Impressive this young bull, with a breed top 1% Maternal (Milk) figure of +13, is out of Denizes Trixi Belle 8. With a little track record behind him, Denizes Phantom, who will now be aimed at the February 2025 Stirling Sale, was a first prize winner in the summer at the Simmental English National Show held within the Royal Lancashire Show.
Commenting on his Supreme Champion, the judge Paul McDonald said: “This bull just immediately caught my eye when he came into his class. He’s stylish with a super head, is very correct, and walked extremely well. He has a bit of power to him, is a clean bull with good lines, and is very good over his plates. In my eyes a very worthy Champion and with every prospect to go on to be a breeder’s bull.”
Judge Paul McDonald
It was quite a day for the Denizes herd team of seven entries and amidst some strong competition from a quality entry of 60 catalogued Simmentals from eighteen breeders situated around the UK. A combination of prize winning and breeding the herd highlights included: Overall Supreme Champion; Senior Champion; Junior Champion; From their team of seven entries, four red tickets were secured; A further class was won by a Denizes bred animal, and two further first prizes were by Denizes sired animals. Quite a day, and with a connectivity in breeding five half sisters of the day’s Champion will be heading to the Simmental Next Generation IV Sale of Females also at Borderway, on Friday 6th December.
Speaking afterwards John Barlow said: “It’s been as good a day as we could ever have hoped for. This is the third time we’ve won the Overall Supreme at the Simmental Youngstock Show but the first time we’ve won both the Junior & Senior Championships on the same day. The Simmental Youngstock show just keeps going from strength to strength with the quality and number of entries, a real credit to the exhibitors, and its proving to be a terrific promotional platform for the breed and for forward Simmental sales.”
Reserve Senior & Reserve Overall Champion Delfur Phantom
Following on from their Championship winning Simmental Youngstock debut last year, Delfur Farms, Rothes, Aberlour were back in the prizes when winning the Overall Supreme Reserve and Reserve Senior Championship with the winner of the first class of the day Delfur Phantom. April 2023 born, this bull is by the 10,000gns Innerwick Ivor 17, a Curaheen Gold Digger son, and is out of Delfur Hetty, an Islavale Cassius daughter. A strong pedigree, Innerwick Ivor 17 is also the sire of Delfur Weigela M1 who was the breed’s Reserve Senior Female Champion at last year’s Stars of the Future Calf Show in Stirling, whilst Islavale Cassius is described as being a ‘great female breeder in the herd’. Of the Overall Reserve, the judge Paul McDonald said: “Again, this was another very modern Simmental bull. With size and power he had plenty of length, a good top, a great end and walked out really well.”
Junior Champion Denizes Rolls Royce
The Junior Champion was the winner of class four for bulls born on or between 1st January 2024 and 15th March 2024, and in the shape of Denizes Rolls Royce and from the Barlow team. Also by Saltire Impressive this January 2024 born calf is out of Denizes Fancy Therese 9th, a Bosahan Dynamo daughter. Again with a view to the forward sales, Denizes Rolls Royce is being aimed at the Carlisle Sale in May next year, whilst a sisters daughter will be another available at the aforementioned Next Generation Sale in December.
Reserve Junior Champion Grangewood Robert The Bruce
A worthwhile trip over from North Yorkshire saw Mr & Mrs AS & YA Leedham, Rowan Farm, Pickering win the Reserve Junior Championship with their stylish young prospect Grangewood Robert The Bruce. This February 2024 born calf is by the herd’s noted stock bull Ranfurly Impeccable 14 17 (ET) EX94, and is out of the homebred Grangewood Gretal’s Lyla VG87, a Grangewood Glenlivet daughter. Plans from here are to show Grangewood Robert The Bruce through next summer before entering him for the October Simmental Sale at Stirling. Regular exhibitors, the Reserve Junior Championship matched Grangewood Polly’s Karina with whom the 35-cow Grangewood herd picked up the Reserve Junior Female title with at the corresponding Simmental Calf Show in 2019. Robert the Bruces’s sire, the 8500gns Ranfurly Impeccable, is a previous breed Champion at the Royal Ulster Balmoral Show, and his progeny have met with considerable success at both sales and summer shows. In May this year an Impeccable son, Grangewood New Hope, was the 7200gns top price at Carlisle’s Simmental May Sale.
Pairs Springfield Perry & Pelle
The Simmental Youngstock Show has been a happy hunting ground for Gavin Brown, Springfield Farm, Penicuik having won an Overall Supreme; Reserve Supreme & Reserve Junior Championship; Overall Senior Championship and Overall Reserve in the last two years. Another title was secured this year when Springfield Perry and Springfield Pelle combined to win the Pairs Championship. These bulls, both sired by the herd’s noted sire Islavale Jabba, had stood second and third in their class respectively to the Overall Reserve Supreme. Both May 2023 born Springfield Perry is out of Springfield Izzy, whilst Springfield Pelle is out of Springfield Hils. First time exhibitors at the Simmental Youngstock Show was D&R Holdings, Low Bowhill Farm, Newmilns, Ayrshire and who took the Reserve in the Pairs Championship with their heifers Bowhill Poppy, and Bowhill Petal, both Pistyll Kingman daughters.
Junior Young Handler Jim Goldie
Senior Young Handler Owen Airey
A big mention also to two terrific Young Handlers classes that saw first prizes for both Jim Goldie Jnr, Newbie Mains Farm, Annan, Dumfries, and also for Owen Airey, Little Urswick, Ulverston.
Other class winners on the day came from the Crakeside herd of Nick Edmonson; the Braegarrie herd of DL & S Currie; the Urswick herd of Owen Airey; and the Newbiemains herd of Jim & Patricia Goldie.
There was a great atmosphere in the Simmental lines and around what was a large ringside audience. A huge thank you is extended to all of the breeders for again supporting this event in such great numbers and for putting on another terrific Simmental show case.

The stars were aligned as Simmentals shone at the Cornwall Beef Champions of Tomorrow, held on Saturday 19th October at the Royal Cornwall Showground Wadebridge, and where they came away with a hatful of interbreed titles.
Overall Supreme Champion Bosahan Rosella Ingrid Venus
In what is a remarkable achievement, the Bosahan herd of John, Bridget & Daniel Olds, Bosahan Farm, Falmouth, Cornwall lifted the Overall Supreme Champion Calf, Overall Continental Champion, and Simmental Champion awards for a second consecutive year! Taking the hat trick of titles this time round was the January 2024 born heifer Bosahan Rosella Ingrid Venus, sired by Kinclaven Infusion (P) EX 93, a Lynde General son, and out of Bosahan Ingrid Venus EX92 (EX2). Ingrid is one of eleven ‘excelllent’ daughters sired by Skerrington Armada currently in the Bosahan herd and hails from the Brigstock Venus family.
The 2023 treble was achieved by another January heifer, Bosahan Paloma Estelle (P), also sired by Kinclaven Infusion (P) EX 93.
In all twelve continental and native breed Champions were paraded before Mrs Gail Ellis (Trencrom British Blues) who judged the Overall and gave the Championship tap to the Bosahan heifer.
Earlier in the day the continental breed classes were judged by Mr Graham Reed, Well Farm, Bickleigh, Tiverton, Devon and who put Bosahan Rosella Ingrid Venus up as Overall Simmental Champion.
Killiworgie Rockafella
Taking the Simmental Reserve Championship was Killiworgie Rockafella from Steve & Gill Gummow, Higher Killiworgie Farm, Newquay, Cornwall. Entirely homebred, this January 2024 born bull calf is Killiworgie Emperor (Auchorachan Wizard x Ballinalare Buttercup 2nd), and is out of Killiworgie Chrissie’s Izzie EX92. Rockafella was shown by Steve & Gill’s grandson Sam Gynn, who was making his showing debut, and who won a terrific second prize in the young handlers 10-13 years category.
Steve & Gill Gummow’s grandson Steve Gynn, on his ‘showing debut’ and with Killiworgie Playboy.
The Gummows with their Simmental team enjoyed a top day winning a host of titles and including:
Senior Overall Champion; Senior Continental Champion; Senior Overall Reserve; Senior Res Continental; and Reserve Simmental Champion
Killiworgie Playboy
Taking the Continental Championship for calves born between October 1st to 31st December 2024, and Overall Senior Champion Calf, was Killiworgie Playboy. Sired by Popes Matchmaker, who was purchased at Stirling in October 2022 for 8000gns, Out of Killiworgie Buttercups Hannah EX91, Playboy’s maternal line goes back to Ballinalare Buttercup, a prolific show heifer in Northern Ireland. The Gummows will look to show Killiworgie Playboy next year and with an aim thereafter to take him to Stirling.
Killiworgie Kerensas Paige
Standing in Reserve was a Matchmaker daughter, Killiworgie Kerensa’s Paige, out of Killiworgie Camelia’s Kerensa, another successful show family founded by Boars Head Grace 4th (Camus Brandy). This November 2023 born heifer will be shown locally next year.
It’s a huge well done to the Bosahan, and Killiworgie herds for their multiple title wins, and to all of the Simmental exhibitors for promoting the breed so well. There’s more to Cornish Simmentals!
