Sound Trade For Simmentals At Thirsk
The North East Simmental Club held their second sale at the new Thirsk Rural Business centre on Tuesday 8th May 2007, in conjunction with Thirsk Auction Mart.
As with last year’s sales, the limited entry attracted buyers from some distance and ensured a steady trade for the females forward.” This sale is attracting sound commercial trade in this area”, said Fiona Sloan, Development Manager for the Simmental Society. “I am sure it will go from strength to strength.”
Top price of the day was Blakewell Gentian’s Snowdrop from Messrs I & M Steele, Blakewell Farm, Easington, Hull when she sold for 1550gns, to Mr Ian Willison, Williamwood Farm, Warsop Vale, Mansfield, Notts. Born in March 2005 this heifer is an AI daughter of Blackford Harvester and out of Salisbury Gentian. The Steeles’ followed this with the second top price for Blakewell Katie’s Mischief when she sold to Mr R W Leach, Ringstone Royd Farm, Halifax for 1300gns. This time by Sterling Herkules, Katie’s Mischief sold with her December born Blackford Harvester heifer calf at foot, Blakewell Mischief’s Tiffany.

Simmentals lead the way at Perth
Following an outstanding trade for Simmental cross breeding cattle the previous Friday, a good show of Simmental bulls at the United Auctions Perth Multi Breed sale on Monday 7th May 2007 held in conjunction with the British Simmental Society, attracted a huge interest from buyers from early in the day. The interest in the judging, conducted by Gillian Greenhill, Craighill Farm, Duntrune By Dundee, Angus, continued to the lines and onto the sale ring where all but two of the 25 bulls forward found new homes.
“It is good to see so many people interested in the breed. “said Fiona Sloan, Breed Development Manager. “The fast finishing of the Simmental and easy management of the Simmental cross suckler cow is paying dividends to farmers under the current farming system.”
The top price of 4,200gns was reached twice, both times by Henry and Susan Widdicome who justified their long journey from Ashprington Court, Ashprington, Totnes, Devon, when Starline Shakespeare led their string from the Starline Herd. A Blackford Hawk son, out of a home bred cow by Wroxall Field Marshall, he stood 2nd in his class earlier in the day and sold to Messrs K.M.Fraser, Pitcairlie, Wester Lumbennie, Newburgh, Fife.
Two lots later, Starline Summit also made 4,200gns when he sold to Messrs G. Wealleans & Son, Angel Row, Greenlaw, Duns. A 17 month old son of the famous Blackford Northern Light and this time out of the home bred Starline Karissa 6th, a daughter of Starline Decision he stood 3rd in his class earlier.
Four bulls topped the 4,000gns mark led by Messrs R. & P McAllister, Langalbunioch Farm, Kingarth, Argyll & Bute, who followed a good trade at the Society Sale in Carlisle the previous week, when Bruchag Scottie, the second place bull from the first class sold to Mr. I. D. Warren, Coull Farm, Bruichladdich, Isle of Islay. Scottie is a Woodhall Klinsman son out of Bruchag Wendy 7th by Brinkton Bonzo . Robert then equalled his top when his next bull, Bruchag Saturn, also by Woodhall Klinsman, sold for 4,000gns to James Orr, Rumbletonlaw Farm, Greenlaw, Duns. Stuart Stronach, Berryleys Farm, Grange, Keith, Banffshire, saw his good string of bulls lead off with Islavale Shamrock, when he sold to Messrs J. Strathearn & Partners, Foot O Green, Stirling. A son of Glenturk Premier out of a home bred Gretna House Supersonic cow, he stood second in Class 5.
Late in the day the bulls from W.H.Robson & Sons, Kilbride Farm, Cogry Road, Doagh, Ballyclare, justified their first visit to the sale when their leader and Champion from the show earlier made the long journey back to Northern Ireland, when he was purchased by Mr. G.A.Hamilton, 100, Barnish Road, Randalstown, Co. Antrim for 4000gns. A January 2006 bull, Kilbride Farm Titan, like his other two brothers in the sale, is an Embryo son of Kilbride Farm Eunice 4th and Carnkern Titan.
Gillian Greenhill’s Reserve Champion, Keeldrum Santos, by Milnafua Junior from David Lowry, Newsteadings Farm, Cartland, Lanark, sold to Messrs G. M. Angus, & Sons, Mains of Cookney, Netherley, Stonehaven when he paid 3,800gns for this July 2005 born bull.
Stuart Stronach followed up on his earlier success when Islavale Saxon, another son of Glenturk Premier, changed hands for 3,600gns to Matthew Crawford Jnr, Glenniston Farm, Cardenden, Fife. Robert McAllister’s, Bruchag Sam, again a son of Woodhall Klinsman and the first bull in the ring, set the sale when he made 3,500gns to Messrs D. Bell & Son, Kincraigie, Strathmiglo, Fife. Another Glenturk Premier son from Stuart Stronach, this time Islavale Spartacus also changed hands for 3,500gns, when he sold to Mr. A. Biffen, Mains of Arnage, Ellon, Aberdeenshire.

The British Simmental Society held its Annual Spring Sale at Carlisle and drew a strong crowd for the quality entry of bulls and females. The sale saw an increased entry and averages were up £75 for the bulls on the previous year with more sold giving a 78% clearance. Buyers and sellers alike had come from all over the country for this increasingly popular sale.
Prices peaked at 3,200gns, when the pre sale judge, Sandy McDowall, Culquhasen, Glenluce, Newton Stewart, stood by his Champion Hockenhull Tonga, from Hugo Arnold, Hockenhull Farms Ltd, Tarvin, Chester. Tonga is a January 2006 son of Lynfield Pointer and is out of Hockenhull Deborah 4th.
The Reserve Champion, Taurus Topic, from R. & V. Loud, Alstone Court Farm, Highbridge, Somerset followed the judges recommendation, when he made the second top price of the day at 2,800gns. Another January 2006 born bull, Taurus was sired by Scotland Hooray Henry and went to The MacAuley Land Use Research Institute, Hartwood Home Farm, Shotts, Lanarkshire.
Mrs. A. Springfield Farm, Greysouthern, Cockermouth, was delighted to see her third prize winner from the first class in the ring, change hands at 2,400gns to Miss Sybil McBryde, Lochmaben, Lockerbie. Rooklea Starwars is a two year old son of Hepplewhite Kong bred by Alison’s father, the Society Vice President, John Trafford. Blakewell Schubert, from I. & M. Steel, Blakewell Farm, Easington, Hull, who took first prize in Class Two, sold to E.D.Jones & Son, Plas Farm, Llangorse, Brecon, Powys for 2,300gns. He is a son of the famous Blackford Harvester and out of the homebred Blakewell Melody.
Messrs Innes Farms made the long journey from Millbrae, Findhorn, Forres, Morrayshire, to purchase the first lot in the ring, Caister Neptune. Neptune, a five year old stock bull from Brian Lundy, Caistor Moor Farm, Caistor, Market Raisen, Lincs, had been an outstanding stock bull to date with a distinguished show record. A son of the home bred Caistor Karl by Gretna House Supersonic, he changed hands for 2,000gns. This was the first of five bulls to make 2,000gns.
R.&M.McAlisters’ Bruchag Supersonic, justified his long trip from Nether Ardroscadale Farm, Straad, Bute, when he sold to M. Hanny, Cardoness & Kingsslaggan, Gatehouse of Fleet. The same purchasers also paid 2000gns for L.J. & A.J. Currys’, Winford Sanderson, from their herd at Lowerdown Farm, Felton, Bristol, is a son of Starline Klassik. A son of Brinkton Brilliant, Rosten Sol,from W. Heaps, Derbyshires Farm, Long Lane, Heath Charnock, Chorley, Lancs also made 2000gns, this time selling to R.Watson & Sons, High Borgue, Kirkcudbrightshire. The fourth 2000gns bid was made by M. Hose, Maryport Farm, Drumore, Stranraer, when he purchased Hugo Arnold’s, second bull, Hockenhull Taiwan another Lynfield Pointer son.
A good show of females of various ages saw all but one of the entries forward find new homes. The 1st prize winner in the first show class of the day, sold to J. & K. Martin, Lower Muirhouse, Cleghorn, Lanark for the top price 2,600gns. Astcote Robyn, a Blackford Harvester embryo daughter from S. & C. Evans, 21 Shoemaker Close, Astcote, Towcester, Northants was sold with her 1st August born heifer calf at foot, Astcote Teasel by Agardsley Bruno. She was followed shortly afterwards by Midhope Rhoda, a heifer from W.J.Hollingsworth, Midhope Hall Farm, Midhopestones, Sheffield, who was sold in calf to Pasturehouse Paleface and changed hands at 2,300gns. She had stood 3rd in her class earlier in the day.
In the unhaltered section, the second cow in the ring, Blackpool Nancy, a Gretna House Jackofalltrades daughter, from J.D. & A. Loftus, Lodge Farm, Thisleton, Kirkham, Lancs sold to N Shand, Cairnorrie Farm, Methlsk, Ellon, Aberdeenshire for £2,000 with her bull calf at foot, Blackpool Trident. Trident is a son of Blackpool Radar and she was in calf again to Dirnanean Shane.
