The British Simmental Cattle Society's Dungannon Spring Show and Sale on April 14, 2008, saw excellent trade with prices peaking at 5000 gns. The Reserve Supreme Champion, Ashland Teviot, an October 2006 born son of Raceview Nigel, achieved this top price for breeders Pat and Frank Kelly. This successful sale at Dungannon Farmers Mart highlighted strong demand for quality Simmental stock in Northern Ireland.
A packed gallery and ringside at Dungannon Farmers Mart on Monday evening, 14th April 2008 witnessed an excellent trade for all classes of stock at the Northern Ireland Simmental Cattle Breeders Club annual Spring Show and Sale.
A quality entry of bulls saw prices peak at 5000 gns paid for the Reserve Supreme Champion, Ashland Teviot, from the father and son team of Pat and Frank Kelly, Tempo. An October 2006 born son of Raceview Nigel, the herd’s stock bull with the dam, Corlesmore Clodagh being female champion at an Elite sale in Naas, some years ago, Teviot sold to F. Watson, Cloughey, Newtownards.
The 15 month old Corrick Vanguard, having lifted the red ticket from class three fetched 2900 gns for his breeders, Cecil and Neil McIlwaine. Bred from the popular AI sire Kilbride Farm Newry and the homebred Carnkern Titan dam, Corrick Limelight, Vanguard was keeping the Newtownstewart based Corrick herd to the forefront having bred the 2007 sale champion.
Twin bulls from the Rosslea farm of Keith Nelson certainly turned heads both in the judging ring and sale ring. Scribby Farms Venus and Virtue, born March 2007, sired by the homebred Drumacritten Samson and from the Dyfed Hello bred Cleenagh Naomi had contrasting fortunes, Venus lifted the Supreme Championship in the judging ring and sold for 2200 gns while his brother beat the champion in price, selling for 2600 gns.
Two big powerful Woodhall Premier sons from the Hiltonstown herd at Portglenone of Robert and Richard Rodgers commanded much attention. The second prizewinning Hiltonstown Troy sold for 2500 gns, while the second bull in the ring, Hiltonstown Talisman, sold for 2200 gns. Nigel Glasgow, Cookstown, sold a Popes Juggernaut son, Bridgewater Farm Victor for 2400 gns. Overall the 20 bulls sold averaged 2175 gns.
Topping the pedigree female section was the second prizewinning Omorga Prince sired Lisglass Vicky. Brought out by Leslie and Christopher Weatherup, Ballyclare, Vicky sold for 2800 gns
Best Opposite Sex to the champion, Drumagarner Vicky was forward from Messrs. M. and E. McCloskey, Kilrea. This junior heifer, born January 2007 was sired by the Blackford Explosion son, Lisglass Python and from the dam, Treetops Legacy. Having failed to meet her reserve, Vicky left the ring unsold. The ten pedigree heifers sold to average 1620 gns.

Class 6: 1st, Messrs. M. and E. McCloskey, Kilrea, Drumagarner Vicky; 2nd, J. L. and C. J. Weatherup, Ballyclare, Lisglass Vicky; 3rd, L. A. Richardson, Maguiresbridge, Cleenagh Vixen.

After the pedigree sale, 30 commercial heifers sold to average an outstanding £877.
Leading a storming trade for these popular suckler replacement heifers were three incalf heifers at £1400, £1350 and £1020 from D. Henderson, Enniskillen. Messrs. Michael and Norman Robson, Ballyclare, achieved a top price of £1050 paid twice for two maiden heifers for their pen of 5 to average £960.
William Dick, Saintfield, sold eight heifers to average £802. Messrs. R. J. and S. R. Mawhinney, Draperstown, sold five yearling heifers to average £720. A cow and calf outfit from W. D. Hazelton, sold for £1900.
