Lisglass herd secures
Ivomec Super pairs title
Ballyclare Simmental breeders Leslie and Christopher Weatherup were triumphant in the 2016 Ivomec Super Pair of the Year competition, held at Fermanagh County Show.
The father and son team exhibited the September 2014 born heifers Lisglass Fabulous and Lisglass Felicity. They qualified at Balmoral Show and are home-bred daughters of the 35-cow herd’s stock bull Dermotstown Delboy – male and supreme overall champion at Balmoral in 2014 and 2015.
English judge Bridget Borlase from the 120-cow Sacombe and Perrywood Herds in Hertfordshire said the winning pair stood out. “They are a true matching pair in terms of colour and type, and they parade well together.”
Six qualifying pairs competed for the prizes at the final. Standing in reserve position were two junior bulls from Joe Wilson’s Ballinlare Farm Herd based at Newry. Ballinlare Farm Goldenballs and Ballinlare Farm Galaxy qualified at Armagh Show, and are sons of the herd’s 20,000gns stock bull Auchorachan Wizard – Perth supreme champion in February 2010.
Bridget Borlase added: ”The young bulls are well fleshed and another true pair.”
Merial Animal Health’s territory sales manager Philip Clarke was on hand to congratulate the winners and present the prizes. The winners collected the prestigious Merial Crystal Decanter and a 500mls pack of Ivomec Super injection, while all finalists received a 200mls pack of Ivomec Super injection.
Almost 30 Simmentals competed for the prizes at Fermanagh County Show. Bridget Borlase praised the quality of the animals on show. “The standard of entries was high throughout all of the classes. There was no tail end, especially in the junior bull class which boasted ten very saleable young bulls.”
Taking the day’s supreme overall title was the female champion Ranfurly Lady Diana 24th, an April 2014 born Raceview King daughter bred by David Hazelton, Dungannon. “The champion oozes style and character,” said the judge. “She is a sweet heifer, long and clean, well fleshed, and parades well.”
Claiming the day’s reserve overall title was the male champion Coolcran Gladiator, a January 2015 born entry exhibited by brothers Shane and Paul McDonald, Tempo. He was sired by former stock bull Kilbride Farm Ahoghill.
“The reserve champion is a modern bull, long and clean, and square of his plates. He is well fleshed and full of breed character,” concluded Ms Borlase.
Runner-up for the female championship was Andrea and Keith Nelson’s Scribby Farms Fiona, a May 2014 born daughter of the 10,000gns herd sire Drumlone Anchor.
Securing the reserve male championship was Joe Wilson’s fourteen-month-old Auchorachan Wizard son, Ballinlare Farm Galaxy.
The DANI Rosebowl for the best performance recorded Simmental bull was awarded to Nigel Glasgow’s Bridgewater Farm Gilroy. This home-bred entry was born in March 2015, and is by Dermotstown Delboy.
Young member Conor Loane from Cookstown was crowned Simmental Stockperson of the Year.
