Lisglass herd claims fourth championship in five years
Ballyclare herd owners Leslie and Chris Weatherup reigned supreme in the Simmental section at this week’s Balmoral Show.
The father and son duo run the 35-cow Lisglass Herd, and Wednesday’s feat marked their fourth supreme overall championship in five years at Balmoral Park.
Catching the eye of Scottish judge Iain Green was the home-bred Lisglass Goddess, a twenty-month-old heifer sired by stock bull Dermotstown Delboy . She is bred from the Omorga Volvo daughter Lummin Bronte.
Iain Green’s family manages 380 commercial suckler cows alongside the noted 200-cow Corskie pedigree herd. He described the Simmental champion as feminine and full of breed character. “It’s been a good show, and the quality of the animals more than compensated for the disappointing number of entries.
“Competition was strong amongst the heifers, with the overall champion coming from the intermediate class. This heifer has tremendous length and width, a good topline and she is 100% correct on her feet and legs.”
Lisglass Goddess made her showring debut at Balmoral, and also secured the breed’s female championship and the exhibitor-bred championship awards.
A delighted Chris Weatherup said: “Dermotstown Delboy has bred sons to a top of 11,000gns, and his daughters are following in their father’s footsteps.
“Delboy was Balmoral champion in 2014 and 2015, and his daughter Lisglass Fabulous was reserve champion in 2016.”
The Weatherup’s won the 2013 championship with the Kilbride Farm Newry daughter Slieveroe Caroline.
Claiming the reserve overall title was the male champion Ashland Humdinger, a sixteen-month-old bull bred by Pat Kelly, and son Frank, from Tempo, County Fermanagh. He was sired by Dermotstown Delboy, and is the first calf bred from Ashland Lady Diamond 7th – one of ten cows in the herd dating back to the 1980s. His granddam is a former Balmoral champion. This bull was junior champion at the Pedigree Calf Fair last November, and is destined for the autumn sales in Stirling.
“This is a well fleshed young bull with width over his shoulders, a level top and a good backend,” commented the judge.
The sixteen-month-old Ranfurly Weikel 18th secured the reserve junior and reserve female championship awards for David and Jonny Hazelton, Dungannon. Sired by Raceview King, she is a daughter of Ranfurly Weikel 11th – 2014 Dankse Bank reserve female of the Year.
