Simmental breaks all breed records

A packed ringside of buyers at Perth saw the Simmentals reach a New Breed Record of £22,000 and a Record Breed Average of £4487, an increase of £1084 on the year, with a clearance of 82%. There were no less than nine 5 figure prices. Commercial buyers looked to buy bulls to breed their own female replacements puting a sound base in an already buoyant market for the breed, following a good trade for females the previous day.

Omorga Samson

The pre sale Judge, Robert McNee, Woodend, Armadale, saw his Junior and Overall Champion Omorga Samson take the new breed record of £22,000 for H.J.W. & J.C. Moore, Ballinderry Rectory, Coagh, Co.Tyrone, Northern Ireland. A 15 month old son of Raceview King and out of Cleenagh Daffodil, he sold to Adrian Ivory, Strathisla Farms, Meigle, Perthshire.

Cairnview Snazzy

A. J. Wilson, Westcroft, Kilwinning, Ayrshire, saw his Cairnview Snazzy, who stood second to the Champion in his class, go to Northern Ireland for 15,000gns when he was purchased by Messrs W.H. Robson & Sons, Kilbride Farm, Doagh, Ballyclare. He is by the famous Salisbury Challenger son, Popes Laird and out of Ravensworth Modesty.

Dirnanean Snowie

The Senior Champion, Dirnanean Snowie from F.J.A. McGowan, Incheoch, Alyth, Blairgowrie, Perthshire, led an outstanding show of bulls from Dirnanean when he sold to Mr. W. J. Hollingsworth, High Midhope Hall Farm, Midhopestones, Sheffield, for 11,000gns. By Omorga Lennox and out of Dirnanean Merry by Dirnanean Jacob, he helped take the herd to an average of 6,400gns for the 5 forward. Another son of Lennox, Dirnanean Scott, sold to G.D. Proudley, Hall Farm, Kildale, Stoksley, Darlington, this time for 7,000gns.

Kilbride Farm Saddam

W.H. Robson & Sons sold Kilbride Farm Saddam to Messrs R.T. & C.A. Bell, 18 Moygannon Rd, Donaghcloney, Craigavon, Northern Ireland, for 11,000gns. Saddam is a 19 month old son of the well known Carnkern Titan who had previously bred progeny to 9000gns. Saddam’s dam, Kilbride Farm Lupin is by Milnafua Graduate, the sire of another 1st prize winner from the previous day, Ashland Super Boy, who also sold for 11,000gns. Adrian Ivory, from Strathisla this time joined forces with Gerald and Morag Smith, Drumsleed, to purchase this Graduate son from Mr. P. Kelly, Ballreagh, Temp, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, who is out of Ashland Lucy, the Northern Ireland Female of the year in 2006.

Halenook Supercharger

Four bulls realised 10,000gns. The first of these was the first prize Intermediate winner, Halenook Supercharger, from Messrs J. Telford and A. Rawcliffe, 15 Achairn, Shinness, Lairg, Sutherland. Supercharger is by Starline Decision out of Halenook Nikki by Dirnanean Jacob. He sold to Mr. N. McGeoch, Hazelden Simmentals, Easter Blacklaw, Stewarton, Ayrshire. The second prize bull in the same section, Samark Superman, from Mr. S.sF. and Mrs E.H. Watson, Beechbrook, 4 Craignageeragh Road, Cullybackey, Ballymena, Northern Ireland, also sold for 10,000gns in a joint bid from Smallburn Farms, Mayne Farm, Elgin and Messrs S.R. & N. Barclay, Harestone Farm Crathes, Banchory.

Grangewood Storm

Mr. & Mrs A.S. & Y.A. Leedham justified their long trip from Gunby Lea Farm. Grangewood, Swadlincote, Derbyshire, when they sold Grangewood Storm, another son of Popes Laird and this time out of a cow by the well known Gretna House Supersonic. He continued his long journey north when he was purchased by Pitgaveny Farms, Pitgaveny, Elgin, Morayshire.

Messrs B.G. & L. Allan, Glenturk, Wigtown, Wigtownshire, had to wait until late in the day for their 10,000gns bid for the 15 month old Glenturk Supreme. A son of Whitemire King Kong, Supreme is out of Glenturk Natasha by Milnafua Keystone, the sire of last year’s top price Glenturk Rolex. He sold to Courance Simmentals, Courance, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire.

Mr. W.G. MacPherson sold Blackford Skyhawk, a son of Curlieu Knight for 9,000gns to Mr. G. Van Der Gucht, Apperley Court, Apperley, Gloucestershire, to join his Deerhurst herd. Skyhawk is out of Blackford Kittiwake by Rosten Barney. The MacPhersons’ were again in the top money when they sold another son of Curlieu Knight, Blackford Soul Man to Messrs J. H. & V.G. Wood, Popes Farm, Dutton, Preston, Lancs, for 8,500gns to join their well known Popes herd. Garrel Farms added to their previous purchase when they bid 8,000gns for Hockenhull Socrates, from Mr. V.H.C. Arnold, Hockenhull Farms Ltd, Tarvin, Chester. Socrates is a son of Hockenhull Norman out of Hockenhull Giselle 3rd by Blackford Harvester.

The third 8,000gns bid of the day went to Messrs G.A. & H.M. Francis, Pistyll Uchaf, Abergorlech, Carmarthen for Pistyll Sam by Raceview King, the same sire as the new breed Record Holder. He is out of Celtic Glamour by Brinkton Sovreign. Messrs Francis’ other bull Pistyll Sion, by the same sire had previously won the Intermediate & Reserve Overall Champion prize in the pre sale show and sold to Annandale Estates, Raehills, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire for 7,500gns.

SIMMENTAL FEMALES A FLYER AT PERTH

Simmentals again saw their averages sore at Perth beginning with the female sale. 37 females averaged £1977 up £830 on the previous year.

Tillymaud Farms, Udny, Ellon, Aberdeenshire set the sale flying when the first lot in the ring made the top price of the day when Tillymaud Malvenas 53rd sold to Mrs. H. Clark, The Croft, 36 The Heath, Hevingham, Norwich for 4,200gns. Malvenas is a daughter of Blackford Lancer and out of Tillymaud Malvenas 42nd by South Park VIP. She was sold in calf to Dirnanean Reformer.

Tillymaud Malvenas 53rd

Another Lancer daughter again in calf to Dirnanean Reformer sold to Garrel Farms, Courance, Lockerbie. A bid of 3,500gns secured Tillymaud Malvenas 54th out of Tillymaud Malvenas 46th who is by Milnafua Extra.

Messrs C. Horrell, Podehole Farm Thorney, Peterborough, Cambridge, purchased 7 lots at the sale and secured Skerrington Tanya 26th for the next top price of 3,800gns from a good draft consignment of heifers from J.Young, Skerrington Mains, Hurlford, Kilmarnock. This heifer is by Sterling Nelson a son of the well known Sterling Flint and out of Skerrington Tanya 11th, a daughter of Dovefields Gallant. She was joined by Skerrington Sophia 5th from the same herd at 2,800, a daughter of Skerrington Legacy also by Dovefields Gallant.

Another Legacy daughter, Skerrington Sunset 19th out of Skerrington Sunset 7th a Brinkton Brilliant daughter went to the same home for 2,200gns. Garrel Farms added to their earlier purchase when they paid 3,500gns for another Legacy daughter, Skerrington Rosebud 44th out of Skerrington Rosebud 28th, by Holestone Jasper. She was joined by Skerrington Rebecca 28th a daughter of Sterling Nelson for a bid of 2,400gns. Philliphaugh Estates,Thirledean, Selkirk, also bought from this draft when they purchased two Nelson daughters, Skerrington Tanya 24th for 2,400gns and Skerrington Roxie 13th for 2000gns again with Gallant breeding on her dam side. The Skerrington draft averaged 2865gns for 7.All of the Skerrington heifers had been running with Corskie Proton.

Corskie Roxanne, from J. Green, Corskie, Garmouth, Fochabers, Aberdeenshire sold to Mr. R. McCulloch, Over Hill House, Armadale, West Lothian for 3000gns. A daughter of Burghbridge Lane, she is out of Corskie Wren J32 by Ballinalare Farm Gascoigne and had been running with Ballinalare Farm Nightrider. Corskie Request, this time by Popes Laird and out of Corskie Bloom 4th sold for 2,800gns to Mr. J. Mosford, Weaver Farm, Cholmondley, Malpas Cheshire. She had also been running with Ballinalare Farm Knightrider. The third entry from the Corskie draft, Corskie Roxy, another Burghbridge Lane daughter, sold to Mr. N. Shand, Cairnorrie Farm, Methlick, Aberdeenshire for 2,100gns. The three Corskie heifers averaged 2,633gns.

B.G & L. Allan, Glenturk, Wigtown, Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire realised 2,600gns for their heifer by Whitemire King Kong out of Milnafua Elga when she sold to Mr. J. Henderson, Ballyheather House, 50 Ballyheather Road, Strabane, Northern Ireland.
Top price from the Starline Draft, sold on behalf of R.H.Widdicome Ashprington Court, Ashprington, Totnes, Devon was 2000gns paid by Messrs Horrell for Starline Brigitt 25th. She is by Blackford Northern Light out of Starline Brigitt 12th, by Blackford Hawk. Messrs Horrell bought another three from this good consignment, namely Starline Orlane 20th for 1200gns, Starline Karina 27th for 1,500gns and Starline Karina 28th at 850gns. The Starline draft averaged 1219gns for 8 sold.

Carlisle Autumn Show and Sale

The Simmental Society Sale held at Carlisle on Friday 10th November 2006, in association with Harrison & Hetherington, saw an increase of £158 on the year’s average to £1575 for 5 more bulls sold. Traditionally a smaller sale than that in the spring, there were limited numbers of buyers for the increased number forward. Top end bulls sold well as did the females, who’s average also increased to £939 for six more sold, an increase of £90.
TIRLEY SHERLOCK, TOP PRICE BULL, bred by S White. Purchased by J H Strawhorn & Son (Lockerbie) for 2,600gns.

Top price of the day of 2,600gns went to Steven White from Clotton, Tarporley, Cheshire for the 16 month old Tirley Sherlock, a son of Hockenhull Punch and out of a Solway dam. He took a short trip up the motorway to join J. H. Strawhorn & Son at Dalmakether, Lockerbie. Mrs E Owen, Bradley, Bilston, West Midlands took the second top price when her first prize senior bull from the pre sale show, judged by John Morton, Floshend Cottage, Gretna, made 2000gns to Messrs T. & M Cannon, Little Torhouse, Wigtown, Newton Stewart. The first bull in the ring, Regency Rumplestiltskin is a son of Shebdon Lieutenant and out of Ronbren Bal-Nina.

CHESTERMANN SIEGFRIED, MALE & SUPREME CHAMPION, bred by N & N Gwynne. Purchased by Messrs McDowall & Co (Newton Stewart) for 2,000 gns.

The Supreme Champion from the earlier show came from N. & N. Gwynne, who were rewarded for their long 9 hour drive from Rhos-Ddu, Crymych, Pembrokeshire when Chestermann Siegfried, a son of their home bred stock bull Chestermann Hale Bopp also went to Newton Stewart, this time to Messrs McDowall & Co, Culquhasen Glenluce and again for 2000gns.

The bull standing second in his class to the Champion, also went on to take the Reserve Supreme ticket for RJS & DM Addison, Keld Farm, Kings Meaburn, Penrith. Lartington Senator, made 1,800gns, when he was sold to R. M. Johnston, High Fotherley, Riding Mill, Northumberland.

Messrs T. Chalmers & Co, Outer Woodhead, Canonbie paid 1,600gns for another second prize winner, Rosten Seth, by the famous Salisbury Challenger, from Bill & Christine Heaps, Derbyshires Farm, Heath Charnock, Chorley, Lancs. W. E. Fores & Son Ltd Grange Farm, Carr Lane, Wadworth, Doncaster, made the long trip from Warwickshire worth while for Moreton Morrell College when they bought Moretonhall Spark, a son of Crackley Landlord for 1500gns.

In the female sale, the Reserve Female Champion led the prices when R. M. Fitton, Moss hall Farm, Chulsey, Lostock, Lancs, sold Simply Lovely with her first heifer calf at foot, Simply Topgirl by Popes Jugernaught to Rachel Henry, Knockallan, Crossmichael, Castle Douglas for 1,500gns. The Female Champion, Blackpool, Suppose So, a maiden heifer from J.D. & A. Loftus, Lodge Farm, Thistleton, Kirkham, Lancs made 1150gns when she sold to D C Houldey, Cruxfield House, Duns, Berwickshire, who also paid 1050gns for another maiden heifer, this time from K. G. Holliday, Sruddabank, Calderbridge, Seascale, Cumbria. Struddabank Spot, is by Struddabank Mouse and stood second to the female champion in her class. Messrs I & E Glendinning, Newfield, Ruthwell, Dumfries, paid 1,000gns for Blakewell Lily’s RV from R.C. Lloyd, Grayrigg, Houghton, Carlisle. This daughter of Blakewell Nimbus was bred by F. Douglas & Son.

Perth Autumn Show and Sale

A level show of quality bulls at Perth, resulted in one of the best sales of Simmental Cattle for many years. The demand for quality commercial cattle meant that 80% of the 117 bulls forward found new homes through the ring with more sold privately later. The breed average increased by £855 on the year for 15 more sold to level at £3944 for 93.

Dirnanean Salvador - 10,000gns

The top price of the day was 10,000gns and realised twice. The first of these was Finlay McGowan’s, Dirnanean Salvador, from Incheoch Farms, Alyth, who sold to Rory Bell, Roxburgh Mill, Kelso. Salvador is a March 2005 bull by Starline Nelson, a son of Starline Klassik out of a Dirnanean cow by Arkmill Franklyn and had been placed 2nd in his class in the pre sale show.

Kilbride Farm Strabane - 10,000gns

The second 10,000gns bid of the day came in a joint purchase by Delfur Farms, Rothes, Aberlour and W.G. McPherson, Blackford, Croy, Inverness, when they purchased Kilbride Farm Strabane, from W H Robson & Sons, Doagh, Ballyclare, Northern Ireland. Strabane was Judge, David Lowry’s pre sale Intermediate and Overall Champion and a part of the winning Group of Three. He is by Kilbride Farm Newry a son of Dovefields Gallant.

Another prize winner from the earlier show, this time the Reserve Intermediate Champion from Colin Fordyce, Islabank Farm, Meigle, changed hands to Messrs W.A.Galloway & Son, Culnoag, Sorbie, Newton Stewart for 9,500gns. This bull had previously been Junior Male Champion at this year’s Highland Show and Reserve Overall Champion at Alyth, his only two outings prior to the sale. He is by the Strathisla stock bull Blackford Lionheart and out of a Milnafua cow.

A bid of 8,500gns secured the next stock bull for the Blackpool Herd of Messrs J. D. & A. Loftus, Lodge Farm Thistleton, Kirkham, when they purchased Dirnanean Shane another son of Starline Nelson from Finlay & Neil McGowan. The dam of this bull is bred from top maternal lines in both Austria and Canada and is currently 15 years old.

 Lot 582 Ballinalare Farm Spartacus

Joe Wilson, Martins Lane, Newry Co. Down, also sold Ballinlare Farm Spartacus for 8,500gns to John Hamilton, Aikengall, Innerwick, Dunbar. Spartacus had previously been awarded the Junior Championship before being placed Reserve Overall. He is by Innerwick Krackerjack and out Seepa Kay by Hillcrest Butcher.

The third member of the reserve group from Dirnanean held a good average for the McGowan family when Dirnanean Soloman sold to Hugo Arnold’s, Hockenhull Herd from Cheshire for 8000gns. Another son of Starline Nelson, he again followed the Judge’s recommendation when he was awarded the Reserve Senior title at the pre sale show. A further two bulls also secured 8000gns bids. Firstly, the winning group of three from W. H. Robson & Son, when Kilbride Farm Scarva, also by Kilbride Farm Newry, sold to Stewart Farms, Balglass, Lennoxtown, Glasgow.

Gethan Lloyd’s long trip from Glanrhyd, Carmarthen proved well worth while when his Junior bull, Crugmelyn Shamrock. which had previously been the Junior Champion at the Royal Welsh in 2006, sold for 8000gns to Mr. D. Smith, Sunnyhill View, Sandscross, Turriff. He is a son of Raceview King and out of a homebred Crugmelyn cow by Wroxall Extreme.

Wroxall breeding also featured in the breed lines of Burndennett Spain, from Mr. J. Henderson Ballyheather House, Strabane, Co Tyrone. He was sired by Dellfield Lloyd a son of Wroxall Field Marshall and sold to Finlay McGowan’s Dirnanean Herd for 7500gns. Mr. A Jack, Kilcoy Mains, Killearnan, Muir-of-Ord purchased Corrick Supreme, who had won his class earlier, from Cecil McIlwaine, Plumbridge Road, Newtownstewart, Co.Tyrone.

Another bid of 7000gns secured Skerrington Showman for Messrs J. H. Logan & Co, Dalfask Farm, Girvan, from John and William Young, Skerrington Mains, Hurlford, Kilmarnock. Lindsay & Dorothy Moffat sold Innerwick Sultan, a son of Oakhill Ned to Mr. A. Young Bunchrew, Inverness for £6,800.

Three bulls reached a level of 6,500gns. Firstly the Senior Champion, Wroxall Shaggy a polled bull by the Danish imported Langmose Triton from Dan & Rob Evans, Abbey Farm, Wroxall, Warwick sold to Snaigow Farming Partnership, Hillocks of Clunie, Blairgowrie. He was then matched by Messrs J. B. & E.J. Peiles, Pasturehouse Snickers from Bolton Low Houses, Wigton, Cumbria. A son of Harestone Hercules, he travelled north to Pitgaveny Farms, Elgin, Morayshire. The Reserve Junior Champion bull, Corskie Storm, from Mr J. Green’s Corskie Herd at Garmouth Fochabers, also sold for 6,500gns to Whitehouse Farms, Mains of Whitehouse, Alford. He is a son of Ballinlare Farm Nightrider.

In all 11 lots made in excess of 7000gns.

Female Sale Report
A packed ringside at Perth saw the female averages for Simmental females rise by £500 on the year for more animals sold. 40 of the 45 lots forward found new homes to average £2138 with a clearance of 90%.

Top price of the day went to one of an outstanding draft from Hector Macaskill’s Woodhall Herd which grossed £29,925 for the 8 heifers sold. Woodhall Raylee, a daughter of Woodhall Nutcraker, changed hands at £6300 to Joe Wilson, 4 Martins Lane, Newry, Northern Ireland one of 3 lots he purchased from the draft. Woodhall Raylynn by Corrick Nebraska a son of the famous Corrick Kentucky Kid and in calf to Ballinlare Farm Rival, bred by the purchaser and joint top price at Perth of !0,000gns in February 2005 when he was purchased jointly by Hector Macaskill and Lindsay & Dorothy Moffat, Innerwick, Dunbar. She was purchased for £5250 followed by Woodhall Rilee at £3780 and Woodhall Rosebud at £2100.

The second top price of the day also came from the Woodhall Draft when Woodhall Ronli sold to Messrs Horrell, Podehole, Peterborough. A daughter of Mackney Hector, she was again sold in calf to Ballinlare Farm Rival.

 Lot 414 Blackford Rhiannon

The pre sale Champion Blackford Rhiannon, by Kilbride Farm Millar from Billy & Anne McPherson’s Blackford Herd, sold to Mr. B. Jones, Cefn-Isa, Dolwen, Abergele for £3990. Another from the Blackford Herd and by the same sire was Blackford Ruby, sold to Colin Inglis, Dalachy, Aberdour for £4935. Ruby is out of Blackford Flame the dam of Blackford Northern Light who was sold for 15,000gns in February 2004.

PRODUCTION SALE OF PEDIGREE SIMMENTALS FOR CHARLES GOULD & OTHERS
A good level demand throughout with the best of the trade for the in calf heifers which averaged 790gns and a nine month old heifer calf by Dirnanean Panther certainly caught the eye and was eventually sold at 740 gns.
