Simmental bulling heifers from Dorothy Moffat, Innerwick Farm, Dunbar sold strongly and to £2350 at the Scottish Simmental Club Annual Show and Sale sponsored by Carrs Billington and held within a sale of some 340 breeding cattle at Stirling on Monday May 2nd. From a quality offering a number of Innerwick heifers made over the £2000 mark with 14 in all averaging £1915.

Aberdeen & Northern Marts sale of cast cows and bulls at Thainstone on 21st April saw a Simmental from Drumsleed, Fordoun make £2390.
Hallworthy Market’s store cattle sale on 21st April, saw an outstanding run of 450 cattle with 300 Stores topping out at £1675, for a trio of long tall strong Simmental Steers from A P & D J House of St Issey, their next was a superb fleshy Sim x Steer to £1650, and another strong pair at 24 months to £1590. Again in the heifers it was the House Family out in front with a sparkly Simmental x Heifer, deep and well fleshed to £1550, and another pair at £1400. Younger Heifers were the same as the Steers with J Vincent of Pillaton seeing his single Simmental x Heifer at 14 months to £1110, with M C Winn with a 12 month showy Heifer to £1095. United Auctions, Stirling on Wednesday 20 April 2022 sold 2113 store cattle. Heifers (934), averaged 234.77p and to £1640 for a 646kg SimX from Shieldburn. Young Bulls averaged 207.59p and to £1060 for a SimX from East Cauldcoats.
On Wednesday 20th April at Carlisle, Harrison & Hetherington had 1188 cattle forward at their weekly sale comprising of 592 Store Cattle, 260 store bulls and weanlings, 226 calves. Featuring in the top prices of a fantastic sale, Simmental crosses from Messrs Potter, Cardew House, Carlisle sold to £1840.
At Dungannon Farmers Mart on 20th April, Dropped Heifer Calves peaked at £335 for a Sim presented by a Dungannon Farmer. At Morgan Evans & Co Ltd, Gaerwen Auction Centre, Anglesey on 19th April, a fast OTM trade was toped at 173ppk for a 714kg Simmental cross.
At Lawrie & Symington’s sale of store cattle at Forfar on 19th April, 113 heifers sold to a top of £1460 for a 652 kg Simmental cross from W. Stewart & son, Newton of Inshewan.
On 19th April at Bentham Livestock Mart sale, Farmers Stirks, 712 forward. One of the largest entries to date saw trade remain firm with plenty of customers in attendance including some from Aberdeenshire and a strong Yorkshire contingent. A nice run from Mason & Gardner, Philpin saw a strong Simmental heifer top the heifer trade at £1210.
At Quoybrae, Caithness on 18th April, Aberdeen & Northern Marts sold 619 store cattle. Bullocks (357) averaged 247.3p and sold to £1,740 gross for a 758kg Simmental Cross from Brae Edge, Castletown. Heifers (262) averaged 234.8p and to £1,565 gross for a 693kg Simmental Cross from Ha, Durran.
Within Rugby Farmers Mart’s sale on 18th April, a good yarding of Breeding Cattle saw a nice enquiry for future breeding. Aged Cows and Calves from Messrs Herbert saw a top of £1670 for a Simmental Cow 2012 with 4 month Steer calf at foot with others £1620. Younger units from Ibbetson & Crawley saw £1730 for 2018 Simmentals with 3 month Simmental Bull Calves at foot with 2014 units similar at £1720 and £1700.
On 16th April, United Auctions sold 701 cattle at Huntly. 314 heifers sold to average 238.5p per kg and to £1520 for SimX’s from Auchnascraw.
In a sale of calves at Sedgemoor on 16th April, the top price was £435 for a superb young Simmental from RD Knight & Son, same Vendor £368 and £325.
In a sale of 145 store cattle from Orkney consignors at Aberdeen & Northern Marts Thainstone centre on 15th April, Bullocks Sold to a top of 296.6p per kg for a 386kg Simmental from Maesquoy Farms, Harray. On the same day a sale of store cattle on behalf of Shetland consignors, saw (35) bullocks sell to a top of £1,240 gross for a 550kg Simmental from J & K Scollay, Tirvister.
Again at Thainstone on 15th April, Aberdeen and Northern Marts held a sale of 1,504 Store Cattle, Young Bulls and Young and Weaned Calves. Heifers (643) averaged 243.3p and sold to £1,490 gross for a pen of four 584kg Simmental crosses from Mill of Kintocher, Craigievar. Bulls sold to 235.4p per kg for a 412kg Simmental cross from East Cairnorrie, Methlick.
At Aberdeen & Northern Marts Prime Cattle Sale on 14th April, the small section of heifers averaged 234.1p and sold to 241p per kg and £1,735.20 gross for a 720kg Simmental from Lost Farm, Strathdon. On the same day Aberdeen and Northern Marts sold 240 Cows and Bulls to average £1,438.56 (206p per kg.) Beef Finished Cows (116) averaged £1,639.65 and sold to £2,230 for a 996kg Simmental cross from Milton of Noth, Rhynie. Beef Feeding Cows (91) averaged £1,212.14 (+£2.08) and sold to £1,510 (thrice) including a 808kg Simmental cross from Candyglirach, Drumoak.
On 14th April at Caledonian Marts, Stirling, Prime Bullocks sold to £1813 for a Simmental from J & J Brown, Loanrigg. At Frome’s prime cattle sale on 13th April and the UTM steers, a quality Simmental from Messrs AH Collins roared to 209.50p/kg or £1621, the day’s top gross price, with others from Waddon Farm sold to £1382.
On Wednesday 13th April at Carlisle, Harrison & Hetherington had 1303 cattle forward at their weekly sale comprising of 651 Store Cattle, 296 store bulls and weanlings, 316 calves. Trade was as good as ever with a day’s top of £2000 achieved for a Simmental cross steer for regular vendors Messrs Robinson, Rowell Farm, Milnthorpe.
At Exeter’s sale of TB restricted (orange) cattle on 13th April, the store cattle section saw steers top a £1520 for a pair of well grown Simmental bullocks (21m) from Jesse White of Sandford.
At Lodge & Thomas’s Truro Livestock Market on 13th April, prices for cull cows were sitting at an all-time high. Beef types sold to a top of 197p/kg including a smart 689kg Simmental from Messrs J G A Raymont & Son of St Merryn, Padstow, purchased by Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh.
At Lanark on 12th April, Lawrie and Symington Ltd sold 981 Store Cattle at their April Show & Sale. Heifers peaked at £1630 for a Simmental from Penicuik Estates.
SIMMENTAL CENTRE RECORD FOR PRIME BULL AT CARLISLE! On Monday 11th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock and with an entry of 71 prime bulls. A fantastic trade was achieved throughout. Setting a new centre record for the Simmental breed – the previous record was only set in the previous week – was Messrs Goldsbrough, Oakrigg Farm, Moffat selling a 1076kg bull to £2404 and purchased by A & D Meats.
At Market Drayton’s sale of barren cows and cull bulls on April 11th, stock bulls sold to 177p (£1,699.20) for a Simmental from the Roe family.
In a sale of store cattle on 8th April at NWA’s Lancaster Market, Continental bullocks peaked at £1640 for a Simmental from JA&SM Allen, Windermere. Simmental heifers sold to £1380 for a pen of three from EJ Burrow, Milnthorpe. On the same day Simmental cows sold to £1676 from Barlow Bros, Croston.
At Frome’s Prime Cattle Sale on 6th April a good show of UTM heifers saw Messrs LJ Curry’s outstanding Simmentals which roared to a huge £1707, the top gross price on the day, or 229.50p/kg and £1638 or 227.50p/kg.
Simmental cattle were again firmly to the fore in the top prices and sections of the sale of 264 breeding cattle held at Aberdeen & Northern Marts Thainstone Centre, on Tuesday 26th April.
Leading the strong Simmental sired entries, and heading the heifer with heifer calf section, was a Simmental cross with Limousin cross calf at foot at £3,100 from regular consignors George and Charles Gordon, Lost Farm, Strathdon, Aberdeenshire.
The Cow with Bull Calf section sold to £2,500 for a Simmental cross with Limousin cross calf from Knowehead, Kildrummy. Cows with Heifer Calves sold to £2,150 (twice) including a Simmental with Limousin cross calf from Knowehead.

In the annual show and sale of heifers with calves at foot, kindly sponsored by East Coast Viners and judged by David Barclay, Tullo of Garvock, Laurencekirk, the Overall Reserve Champion and winner of the Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the Champion Simmental Sired heifer went to Craig Malone, Pitcairn Farm , with a Simmental cross with Limousin cross bull calf realising £2,800 to the judge.

In the show of breeding bulls the top price Simmental was Rockytop Leo which made 4000gns for Gary & Angela Christie, Birchfield, Glass, Huntly. September 2020 born Rockytop Leo is fully homebred being sired by Rockytop I’m Yer Man, and out of Rockytop Tinka’s Geneva.

We are delighted to report that the January 2021 born pedigree Simmental heifer, Overhill House Mary, from Richard McCulloch, Overhill House, West Lothian, sold for a cracking £4000 at Caledonian Marts, Stirling, last Saturday, with all proceeds going to two charities helping children and refugees from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Heading to Ayrshire, Overhill House Mary, sired by Aultmore Goliath, and out of Islavale Caitlin, was purchased by Messrs Smith, Low Bow Hill Farm, Newmilns.
With some outstanding and varied lots forward from farmers and local businesses, the auction held by Caledonian Marts saw all funds raised going to UNICEF’s campaign to Help Protect Children in Ukraine, and for Central Plains Group, a regenerative farming business with operations in Ukraine who are raising funds to help refugees streaming into Western Ukraine from Kiev and East Ukraine.
Again well done to Richard McCulloch for putting this quality heifer forward for such a worthy auction, and a big thank you is extended to the Smiths for their purchase. We’ll be keeping an eye on Overhill House Mary and trust that she goes on to breed well at her new home.

In the sale of cull cows, heifers and bulls at Brockholes Arms Auction Mart on 6th April, Preston, the cow section was topped by Ron Loftus with a Simx to 197p/kg. At the same sale S Phoenix had another Simx cow at 180p/kg.
At Market Drayton’s store cattle sale on 6th April, steers sold to £1,340.00 for 588kg Simmentals from D. & A. Swift & Son On 6th April at Frome’s sale of prime cattle, a good show of heifers saw Messrs LJ Curry’s outstanding Simmentals roar to a huge £1707 top gross price or 229.50p/kg and £1638 or 227.50p/kg.
At Dumfries on 6th April, prime cattle were topped per head £1569.80 by a Sim from East Langate. On 5th April, Holmfirth Market’s OTM trade was topped at 203p/kg (Avg 158.03p/kg) for a Simmental (£1898) from ID & R Jones sold to JB Eastwood & Sons.
In a small sale of prime cattle on 5th April, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd saw Prime bullocks average 232.0p and sell to 232.0p per kg and £1,682.00 gross twice for 725kg Simmental crosses both from Balnageith, Forres.
At Ayr’s breeding cattle sale on 5th April, in-calf cows were topped by Simmental X’s at £1400 and £1350 from Turnberry Lodge. Bulls sold to 2200gns for a Simmental off Messrs Drummond, Skeoch.
Sedgemoor’s sale of barren cows and cull stock bulls on 4th April saw a centre record for a cull bull of £1896.60 and paid for a Simmental from BJ Stephens & Sons, Weston Super Mare. At the same sale, a ‘feeding’ Simmental made 191.5ppk from FA Kingcott & Son, Clevedon. In the sucklers a ‘feeding’ Simmental rose to £1,426.68 from FA Kingcott & Son. Monday 4th April, Simmental bulls were ‘doing the business’ at Carlisle’s primestock sale. A shapey Skerrington Iceman son from Jim & Patricia Goldie, Newbie Mains Farm, Annan, Dumfriesshire weighed in at 891kgs and sold for £2392.94 and 268.5ppkg. Meant for breeding the bull was sold through the prime ring due to injury and went on to realise a tremendous trade.
C & D Auction Marts held their fornightly sale of store cattle in Dumfries on Monday 4th April 2022. Bullocks averaged 239.3p/kg to 305.9p/kg and sold to a top of £1655 for a Simmental from RB Oliphant, Shawfield. The same seller also sold Simm bullocks at £1555, £1465, & £1280.
At Sedgemoor’s store cattle sale on 2nd April, Simmental steers featured in the top prices when peaking at £1650 for JR Westcott & Son, Willand. Dairy bred steers saw a tremendous trade to £1270 for a fleshed Fleckvieh from A Baker, Meare.
At United Auctions April Show & Sale at Huntly, OTMs sold to average 171.2p per kg selling to a record £1920 or 201.1p per kg for a SimX from Pitgaveny, Farms, Elgin.
In a sale of mainly dairy bred stirks, and suckled calves at Exeter on 1st April, Joe Maule across from Okehampton showed a cracking run of well farmed stirks topping at £780 for 10-month-old Simmental crosses (10m).
On 31st March, Thainstone witnessed a phenomenal trade with a new achievement of 16 cows and bulls, including Simmentals, surpassing the £2,000 bracket. Beef Finished Cows sold to £2250 including one from Drumfober, Laurencekirk. Beef Feeding Cows sold to £1450 for a Sim from Drumneachie, Birse. Bulls top prices included a Sim at £1890 from Mains of Cowie, Stonehaven. On the same day, a sale on behalf of Orkney consignors saw prime cattle (30-48 Months) sell to £1,408.35 gross and 229p per kg for a 615kg Simmental heifer from Glebe Farm. The Glebe, Grimbister.
At Truro Livestock Market’s store cattle sale on 30th March the 1 year old heifer section was led by a Simmental x at £905 for Mr L Vague of Baldhu, Truro.
At Ayr on 29th March, clean cattle sold to a top price per kg of 229.5p for a Simmental Heifer off Drumjargon.
At Lanark’s sale of store cattle on March 29th, 301 bullocks were topped at £1425 by a Sim x from Parklea. Sim Bullocks from Overcairn also featured in the top prices pence per kilo when selling at 250p.
Darlington Farmers Auction Mart held their weekly sale of Cast Cattle, Store & Breeding Stock on Monday 28th March 2022. In the cast cows, the top gross valued cow was a hefty Simmental from C & E Gaskin of Marwood at an impressive £1613.
At Worcester Store Market Sale on 26th March, store steers sold to a remarkable 366ppkg for 11month old suckler bred steers from R M Phillips 7 Partners!!
In a sale of calves at Exeter on 25th March, young Simmental bulls featured in the top prices when selling to £375 & £345 for Messrs WJ & J Snell & Son of South Molton.
At Ludlow on Friday 25th March, some very good young, fit, suckled type feeding bulls saw Simmental X Bulls sell to £1225 x2 & £1200.
At Ayr’s store cattle sale on 24th March, the top price per kilo was 284.7 for Simmental bullocks from Figgitoch.
At Oswestry’s store cattle sale on 23rd March, the top price per kilo of two or more steers 13m and over went to Llangedwyn Home Farm with a bunch of 19mo Simmentals weighing 460kg and making 267.4p/kg.
At Frome’s prime cattle sale on 23rd March, EM Horn & Sons, Swanmore, exceptional Simmental raced to 229.50p/kg or £1445, with others from Waddon Farm Ltd selling to 215.50p/kg.
At Dungannon Farmer’s Mart on 23rd March steer prices peaked at £1600 for a 695kg Sim (230.00) presented by A Robinson.
At Anglesey’s Gaerwen Auction Centre store cattle sale on 22nd March, the heifer trade was topped at £1250 for Simmentals from E Jones, Cott Farm, and followed by further Simmentals at £1210 from M Roberts, Glascoed Hall.
