The increase in demand for Simmental Bulls continued this week at the Perth Multibreed Sale on 1st May 2006, when 19 of the 21 bulls forward found new homes selling to a top of 3000gns twice.

Firstly, Henry & Susan Widdicombes’ long journey from Ashprington Court, Totnes, Devon was justified when Starline Revelation, a son of Blackford Hawk, sold to G. Christie, Midtown of Glass, Huntly, then Lindsay and Dorothy Moffat,Innerwick, Dunbar, then matched this when Innerwick Ross, a son of Gortin Larry, sold to W L S Muir, Midhouse, Corrigall Harray, Orkney.

Judge Willie Brown, Laigh Drumdow’s Sale Champion, Tillylair RAF was exhibited by I.A.Hunter, Tillylair Farms, Lumphanan, Banchory and sold to W.I.Moncrief, Berryhill, Easter Fowlis, Dundee for 2600gns. He was matched by another bid of 2600gns by A. Malcolm & Son, Wester Coilechat, Callander, when he purchased Glenturk Romeo by Whitemire King Kong, from Brian Allan’s, Glenturk herd at Newtown Stewart. R & P McAllister, Langalbunioch, Argyll, sold two sons of Woodhall Klinsman for 2500gns. Firstly Bruchag Randy Boy sold to A. Currie, Birchburn, Skiskine, Arran, followed by Bruchag Robbie, who sold to W. Wybar, 4 Ballyfunning Cres., Balfron Station, Glasgow. The Widdicomes’ also realised a bid of 2500gns for another Hawk son when they sold Starline Renown to Bolfracks Farms, Aberfeldy.

Fiona Sloan, the Breed Development & Promotions Manager for the Society said, “All of the recent sales have seen a huge increase in demand for Simmental Bulls. The change to the Single Farm Payment means that farmers need easy to manage cattle which mature quickly and many see the Simmental as the way forward”

SIMMENTAL POPULARITY RISES

A sound underlying commercial trade ensured an increase in averages for the Simmental breed at Perth this week. With more farmers looking to breed their own replacements to keep a handle on their health status and the need for a quick growing, easy to handle animal to tie in with the new Single Farm Payment, confidence is steadily growing in the Simmentals.  Following a very successful sale of females the previous day, the bulls took centre stage and continued a steady trade which without any “high flyers” produced a healthy £3,404 average up £507 on the previous year when 128 were sold. 118 of the 136 bulls forward found new homes giving a clearance rate of 87%.

The Overall Champion at the pre sale show, judged by Michael Durno, was the Junior Champion Innerwick Renown from Lindsay and Dorothy Moffat, Innerwick, Dunbar. A son of Gortin Larry and out of Innerwick Lily, by Innerwick Jubilee, this outstanding young bull sold for the top price of the day of 8000gns to Messrs W. & G. Strachan, Hill of Balmaud, King Edward, Banff.

Innerwick Renown

Earlier in the sale the senior bull Dirnanean Reformer by Dirnanean Nickel from Findlay McGowan sold to Tillymaud Farms, Tillymaud, Udny, Ellon for  7,500gns.
Mr. G. A. Francis and family, travelled all the way from Abergorlech, Carmarthen to purchase Lisglass Romeo for 7200gns, the Reserve Junior Champion from J.L & C.J Weatherup, 48 Lisglass Rd, Irish Hill, Ballyclare, Northern Ireland to join their Pystyll Herd.

A recent Simmental promotion held in Orkney also resulted in 14 bulls finding new homes on the Island.
