A packed gallery and ringside at Dungannon Farmers Mart on Monday evening, 14th April 2008 witnessed an excellent trade for all classes of stock at the Northern Ireland Simmental Cattle Breeders Club annual Spring Show and Sale.
A quality entry of bulls saw prices peak at 5000 gns paid for the Reserve Supreme Champion, Ashland Teviot, from the father and son team of Pat and Frank Kelly, Tempo. An October 2006 born son of Raceview Nigel, the herd’s stock bull with the dam, Corlesmore Clodagh being female champion at an Elite sale in Naas, some years ago, Teviot sold to F. Commercial buyers back Simmental
With a record equalling 22000gns and an average of £4,083 for the 113 bulls sold, there was a positive feeling around the sale ring following the outstanding 100% clearance on the female sale the previous evening. The commercial buyers once again stood by the breeding ability of the Simmental and were prepared to go to five figures to secure their choice.
The packed ringside for the Simmental bull sale at Perth, didn’t have to wait long to see the top price of the day. The 5th lot in the ring, Dirnanean Typhoon from Finlay and Neil McGowan, Incheoch, Alyth, set the sale on fire with a bid of 22000gns from new breeders, David and Nikky Field from the Castlehill Partnership, Upper Burytown, Farm, Swindon, to join their newly formed organic Burytown Herd. Placed Senior and Reserve Overall Champion, by the judge Gerald Smith from Drumsleed the previous day, he fully warranted his placing and price. Typhoon is by Halenook Panache and is a big strong bull with excellent growth figures out of Dirnanean Petula P12 from one of the top dam lines, who calved him as a heifer. His Grand dam is the outstanding breeder Dirnanean Kris.
The next top price came at the opposite end of the sale in the Junior Section when the Junior Champion from Lachlan Quarm, Annick Lodge, Irvine, Annick Talisker sold to the Chairman of Shows and sales for the Society, Hector Macaskill from Woodhall at Innerwick, Dunbar for 20000gns. Talisker is an October 2006 son of Sterling Nelson, who is by Sterling Flint and out of Annick Brackens Primrose by Innerwick Lancelot. He again had excellent growth figures.
Trade again followed the judging when the Reserve Senior Champion, Blackford Tonka, from Billy and Anne MacPherson at Blackford, Croy, Inverness. Tonka is by Drumsleed Pagan and out of Blackford Nona by the well known Rosten Barney. He sold for 11000gns to Ian MacLean, from Kent for his 600 cow suckler herd.
The first 10,000gns bid of the day secured John and William Young’s Skerrington Talent who had earlier stood fifth in his class, for Gavin Doyle who previously resided in Islay and now hails from Higher Fisherton Farm Atherington, Devon. Talent, who picked up a third prize at the Royal last year, is a son of 2006 Reserve Champion at the same show, Corskie Proton, is by Popes Laird and out of Skerrington Tanya 2nd by Skerrington Legacy. He boasts a self replacing index of +40 and a terminal Sire Index of +35. This sale is a welcome boost to his owner John, who’s “dulcet tones” were sadly missed at the sale following a recent stroke. We are reliably informed that he is well on the way to recovery and his voice is still working!
The second 10,000gns bid of the day was made by Jimmy and Ian Green of Corskie, Garmouth, Fochabers when he bought the Overall Champion Kilbride Farm Tarrant from Billy, Michael and Norman Robson, Kilbride Farm, Doagh, Ballyclare, Co. Antrim. By the Cankern Titan son, Seaview Prince Charming, he is out of Kilbride Farm Loftus a well renowned breeder in the herd who is by Milnafua Graduate.
Family partnership Cecil Charters & David Farrell, Derryhowalght, Derryharney, Co. Fermanagh continued the run of good Northern Irish bulls when Lakeside Tommy by Kilbride Farm Hannibal and out of Lakeside Geraldine, another Carnkern Titan daughter, realised a bid of 7,500gns. This time it was Messrs A.G. Stephen & Co, Burnside of Idoch, Turriff who secured the purchase.
Another Irish Tommy, this time Slatequarry Tommy from Jim Hamilton, Sessiah-Scott Road, Rock, Dungannon, also made 7500gns, when he sold to namesake John Hamilton Aikengall, Innerwick, Dunbar, to join his commercial organic enterprise. Tommy is a November 2006 born son of Celtic Rose by Woodhall Premier.
It was finally the judges chance to shine in the sale ring as well as the show ring when his December 2006 born Drumsleed Tartan, son of the Home bred Drumsleed Royale, changed hands for 7,500gns to Clive Houldey Chapel Farmhouse, Duns. Tartan is out of Drumsleed Justine who is by Preston Boomerang. Four lots later and the last animal in the sale, Omorga Tarbuck an ET son of Cleenagh Daffodil by Sterling Flint for John Moore’s Omorga Herd from Coagh, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone, was knocked down for 7,000gns to fellow Northern Ireland breeder Cecil McIlwaine, Newtonstewart, Co. Tyrone. He is a full ET brother to Omorga Prince and half brother to the breed record holder Omorga Samson.
Another 7000gns bid was received for Ashland Trevor from Northern Ireland breeders Pat and Frank Kelly, Tempo, Co. Fermanagh. The Reserve Junior Champion, out of Raceview Lady Diamond, a half sister to Raceview King, she had also bred the Supreme Champion at the Royal Ulster in 2007. Trevor is by Woodhall Premier and made the long journey north to Orkney with D.W.Sinclair a & Co, Unigarth, Sandwick Stromness.
Earlier in the day, Halenook Thor, an AI son of Starline Decision and out of Halenook Nettles from Messrs Telford and Rawcliffe, Achnairn, Shinness, Lairg also sold for 7000gns to J.S.Fraser, Tore mains, Muir of Ord. This April 2006 bull had high figures for growth, milk and replacement value.
Drumcritten Titan the Reserve Intermediate Champion from William Nelson, Rosslea, Co. Fermanagh again attracted a 7000gns bid, this time from Mr. A. H. Mackay, West Greenland, Castletown Caithness. Showing outstanding milk figures, Titan is a September 2006 son of the Eire bred Raceview King and out of Drumcritten Maud who is by Carnkern Titan. Jimmy & Ian Green of Corskie, topped an impressive show of bulls forward from the same stable when their Corskie Turk made 7000gns to M. Cruikshank, Parkfield, Oldmeldrum. By Ballinalare Farm Nightrider, he is out of Corskie Paula a daughter of Popes Laird. Another from Corskie, this time Corskie Toro a son of Popes Laird and out of Corskie Blarney sold to Sir Ralph Anstruther, Lochty Farms, Arncroach, Anstruther for 6000gns. He again had good figures for growth and milk.
Finlay and Neil McHGown followed their earlier success when they sold Dirnanean Trustee to Neil McGoech to join his Hazelden Herd at Easter Blacklaw, Stewarton for 6500gns. Trustee is again by Halenook Panache and out of Dirnanean Magdalene who is a full sister to the Cogent Bull, Dirnanean Jacob and to Dirnanean Renown.
Tillymaud followed their outstanding sale from the previous evening when Tillymaud Tweed took a bid for 6200gns from A & J Mackie, Darnabo, Fyvie, Turriff. Tweed goes back to Starline Marquiss through his sire Delfur Pedro and is out of Tillymaud Jools 22nd who sold for 3500gns the previous evening.
Urrvalley Tornado from Peter Brown at Drumhumphry, Corsock, Castle Douglas travelled from one end of the country to the other, when he sold in a two way split to Neil Barclay, Harestone Farm, Crathes and Smallburn Farms, Elgin, Moray. This September 2006 bull is by Curlieu Knight and out of Caldwell Foremost Iris.
Lanark auctioneer David Lowry swapped his gavel for a white coat and it paid off when he sold his Millburn Tazy for 5800gns to the Duke of Fife, Elsick Estate, Mains of Newhall, Stonehaven. The background to this one is Dirnanean Jacob on to the Camus Frontier daughter, Millburn Lucky.
A high index bull from Messrs Fitton and Son, from Lostock, Bolton, attracted 5500gns from Ross-shire farmer, SB Morrison, Easter Urray, Muir of Ord. A terminal sire index of +29 comes with Simply Thomas, named after Rob’s young son. He is a dark red son of Wroxall Fortune out of Carbery Pippa.
AN INCREASED FEMALE ENTRY ATTRACTS BUYERS
A larger than usual entry of females for the Perth Spring sale, attracted a packed ringside of observers and buyers alike, with standing room only during the Tillymaud Dispersal.
All of the 67 lots forward found new homes to an average of £1592.23, with the six cows and calves averaging £1400.
Leading the bidding and following Gerald Smith from Drumsleed’s judging form earlier in the day, was the show Champion, Sterling Jool’s Tania from Boddington Estates Stirling Herd in the Cotswolds. Tania is a maiden daughter of Corskie Principal by Popes Laird and out of Sterling Alpena’s Jools by Sterling Dougall. Her outstanding show quality and EBV figures encouraged Mr. W.J.Hollingsworth, High Mid Hope Farm, Midhopestones, Sheffield to part with 6500gns to join his Midhope Herd.
Another of the Sterling 1st prize winners and again a Corskie Principal daughter, attracted the next top bid from David and Lesley Sapsed from Hitchin in Hertfordshire, to join their Heathbrow Herd. Sterling Nigella’s Victoria an April 2007 heifer who again has particularly good growth and milk EBV figures. She was sold in calf to Heywood Enzyme.
The next top price once again followed the judging, when Mr & Mrs Field of Upper Burytown Farm, Blunsdon, Swindon, added to their increasing Burytown organic herd, when they paid 3,800gns for Colin Fordyce, Islabank Farm, Meigle, Perth’s, Reserve Champion Blair Tiffany. Tiffany is by Corskie Pascal and out of Blair Lisa by Greenside Courageous and she was sold in calf to the record priced Omorga Samson.
In all Mr & Mrs Field of the Castle Hill Partnership bought 15 lots to an average of 1838gns to join their herd, which they are currently setting up. Three of these lots attracted bids of 2600gns. Firstly, Robert & Pauline McAlisters’ Bruchag Sapphire, who justified her long trip from Langalbunoch, Bute. Sapphire is a daughter of Woodhall Klinsman out of Bruchag Marty 11th and she was sold carrying her first calf by Drumsleed Royale.
The next lot in the ring from Brian, Linda and Graeme Allan, Glenturk also caught the Fields’ eye. Glenturk Susan is by Whitemire King Kong and clearly inherited his size and stature. She was also joined by another at 2200gns from Glenturk. This time the 3rd prize winning Glenturk Tanya again by King Kong and out of a Milnafua Keystone daughter, Glenturk Nemesis.
The last heifer from the first class in the ring, from Andy Wilson’s Cairnview herd at West Croft, Kilwinning also went to Burytown for 2600gns. Cairnview Beth 11th is by Annanwater Pioneer and out of Cairnview Beth 7th by the well known sire Scottish Neff. Allercott Tracey also joined her Champion stable mate at Burytown when she sold to the same buyers Mr & Mrs Field for 2300gns. Bred by Robert Hewlett, the recently retired, long serving, Estate Manager at Boddington. Tracey is by Corskie Principal and out of Allercott Lavinia and stood 5th in her class earlier in the day.
The 2nd prize winner from the Junior Heifer Class, from Eddie Kublin’s Torbeck Herd at Cuminestown Turriff, sold for 3200gns to join John Henderson’s Burndennett herd at Ballyheather House, Ballyheather Road, Strabane, County Tyrone. Torbeck Princess Ruby, is by Camus Noble out of Pasturefileds Princess Regina 3rd by Day Twelve O’clock High. The Boddington success continued when the next lot in the ring and 5th prize winner, Sterling Joyfull’s Vanessa changed hands for 2600gns to J. Gunn Clairdon, Mavsey, Lybster, Caithness. This January 2007 born junior heifer is again by Principal and out of Sterling Joyfull 2nd by Kair Galaxy and joins the Mavsey herd.
Following his earlier success, Andy Wilson sold the 3rd prize Cairnview Modesty 2nd to Northern Ireland breeder, Robin Boyd, Slievenagh, Portglenone, Co Antrim for a bid of 2500gns. By the homebred stock bull Cairnview Robin she is out of Ravensworth Modesty. Mrs. Hayley Clarke from Hetheringham in Norwich paid 2400gns for Stephen Evans’, 2nd prize Astcote Toffee from his herd at Towcester, Northants, to joins her Williams Herd. Toffee is an AI daughter of the famous Sterling Flint out of Astcote Tonia 7th by another well known bull, Gretna House Supersonic and is from a renowned show line.
Following her into the ring was Lachlan Quarm’s Annick Helen’s Tara, who also carried Sterling Flint blood on her sire’s side, Sterling Nelson and featured Gretna House blood on her dam’s side this time Gretna House Fantastic. This October 2006 heifer from Lachlan’s herd at Annick Lodge, Irvine sold to David & Lesley Sapsed’s Heathbrow Herd for 2200gns. This was the same amount paid by M.J. & A.M. Mill, Shawsmill, Cardenden, Lochgelly for the first in from Neill McGeoch’s Hazelden Draft. Orlando Elsa 5th is a first calver bred by Messrs P & M Forrester and is sired by Curlieu Major. She was sold with her heifer calf Hazelden Elsa 3rd at foot by Skerrington Regent.
A QUALITY TILLYMAUD DISPERAL ATTRACTS BUYERS OLD AND NEW
The demand for quality Simmental cattle continued in Perth with packed ringsides for both the female and bull sales. Proceedings got off to an outstanding start when all of the 161 females forward found new homes many to new breeders, showing great confidence by them in the future of the breed.
As expected the eagerly awaited Tillymaud dispersal produced some outstanding cattle and outstanding prices. The dispersal, by Rob and Helen Smith, had come about so that they could concentrate on the dairy enterprise at Tillymaud near Udny, where the Simmental bull, Tillymaud Titian will continue to be used on the diary herd.
Leading the way was Tillymaud Danielle 26th, with her calf at foot Tillymaud Venture. She is by Blackford Lancer, who was bought privately during Foot and Mouth and has had a strong influence on the females in the herd, with sons also selling to 5000gns. She is out of the Danielle line of cows and was sold for 6500gns, to Leslie and Christopher Weatherup, to join their Lisglass Herd based at Ballyclare in Northern Ireland. Danielle 26th was sold in calf to the current stock bull Islavale Sabre, who was later bought by Ian Green of Corskie for 5000gns. Sabre was bred by W.S. Sronach and is a son of Glenturk Premier and carries excellent figures for growth. The Weatherup family also purchased the next top price when they paid 6000gns for the 2006 daughter of Danielle 26th, Danielle 30th another with Blackford Lancer on both sides of her pedigree.
Completing their purchases was the outstanding Lancer bull calf Tillymaud Viscount. A May 2007 born calf with outstanding width and conformation and attracted a bid of 3,500gns to join his mother, Tulipe 39th purchased by the same family for 2800gns to join the Lisglass Herd and who had already bred bulls to 5000gns and was the mother of Tam O’Shanter in the main sale.
Blackford Lancer also featured in the next highest bid, when Tom Henderson Dargill Farm Cottage, Crieff, bought Tillymaud Tulipe 48th for 5200gns, with her Lancer calf Verdict at Foot. In all Mr. Henderson bought 4 lots. Tulipe 43rd ,a daughter of South Park VIP sold for 2800gns , Tulipe 47th, a recently calved daughter of Kilbride Farm Elgar, who sold for 1800gns and Tillymaud Kathy 30th again by Lancer with her Innerwick Jaguar heifer Calf Kathy 33rd at foot who both changed hands for 3200gns.

There were two bids of 4,000gns. Firstly, John Maxwell, Jaw, Fintry, bought Tillymaud Kathy 27th, another Lancer daughter, carrying her third calf to Sabre. Demand for Simmental females increases again
A good show of Simmental females, attracted a packed ringside in Perth on Tuesday 13th November 2007 following immediately after the Charity Auction organised by the Simmental Society to raise funds for the 2008 World Congress which they are hosting in the UK.
The trend for an increased market for Simmental females for both pedigree and commercial breeding continued and ensured a 95% clearance with only 4 failing to find new homes through the ring. A reduced entry due to BTV restrictions, saw the 84 animals forward sell to an average of £1707, with twice the amount of animals of the previous year sold when they averaged £2,138 for the 40 sold.
The 6,000gns top price of the day was judge, Brian Grant, Druid Temple Farm, Inverness’s pre sale Champion Crugmelyn Twilight from Gethan Lloyd, Glanrhyd, Abergorlech Road, Carmarthen. A red and white, April 2006 daughter of Raceview King, she is a past prize winner at the Royal Welsh Show and looks like an outstanding show and breeding prospect for her new owners Jim Goldie and Patricia Ross, Newby Mains, Annan, Dumfriesshire.
There were two bids of 4,800gns. Firstly Peter and Caroline Goldsbrough, Manor Farm, East Cowton, Northallerton, saw Copper Mill Snow Queen also head to Dumfreisshire to join the Maulscastle Farms herd of Simmentals near Annan, together with another four good lots from the sale. Snow Queen is a daughter of Milnafua Diamond out of a home bred cow by Carnkern Titan. The other 4,800gns bid of the day saw Billy and Michael Robsons’ outstanding draft from the Kilbride Farm Herd, Doagh, Ballyclare, Co. Antrim, top when Kilbride Farm Eunice 37S sold in calf to Cairnview Snazzy, who was purchased at the spring sale in Perth for 15,000gns. The purchaser was Bryn Jones, Cefnisa, Dolwe, Aberegele,North Wales. Two lots later, Kilbride Farm Kunne 4S also in calf to Snazzy changed hands for 3,800gns to Sandra Francis, Homestead Farm, Shaftsbury Road, Mere, Warminster, Wiltshire to join her Dinton Herd.
Colin Inglis, Dalachy Farm, Aberdour, Burntisland, paid 3,400gns for Joe Wilson’s Carinview Lerica 7th, an Annanwater Pioneer daughter who was showing a high milk EBV and a good set of figures. She joins his recently formed Greencap Herd.
Another good draft from Lachlan Quarm, Annick Herd, Annick Lodge, Irvine topped at 3,000gns when Annick Primroses Sunflower, sold to J. Aitken, Overton Farm, Fintry Glasgow. Another bid of 3,000gns, secured Dirnanean Tosca T3 for JAC Mill, Brucefiled Farm, Ladybank, Cupar, Fife. Tosca is a Halenook Panache daughter and led another outstanding draft of females from Finley McGowan’s herd at Incheoch Farms, Alyth, Blairgowrie.
The first lot in the ring from Hugo Arnold’s Hockenhull Herd near Chester sold for 3,000gns to Gerald Towers, Turners Arms Farm, Yearby, Redcar, Clevland . She was sold in calf to Dirnanean Solomon and by the home bred Hockenhull Norman and was quickly followed by a bid of 3,500gns for Ian Greens, Corskie Spice from Corskie Farm, Garmouth Fochabers. A twin by Strathisla Nuggat she sold in calf to Popes Laird and joined Messrs Horrell’s, Podhole Herd at Podhole Farm, Thorney, Peterborough.
Main buyers of the day were Mr and Mrs Field from the Castle Hill Partnership, Upper Burytown Farm, Blunsdon, Swindon, Wiltshire, when they bought a total of 23 lots to use as a foundation herd in their new organic farming system. “We chose Simmentals because we needed something quiet.” said Mr. Field “There are lots of children and pathways through the estate and the cattle will come into contact with people on a regular basis.”
“I am delighted with the positive feelings that everyone has for the breed at such a difficult time in the industry.” said Fiona Sloan, Development Manager of the Simmental Society. “The steady increase in quality within the breed is paying dividends for breeders and the buyers are happier with what the breeders are producing. I have every confidence in the Bull sale today, continuing on the same positive note with an outstanding show of quality bulls.”
NORTHERN IRELAND BREEDERS LEAD THE WAY AT A BOYANT PERTH
Following an excellent female sale the previous evening, an outstanding show of Simmental Bulls at Perth showed a record average for an autumn sale at the sale centre. Commercial buyers were prepared to pay high prices for the bulls they wanted and this reflected in a good trade. With the Single Farm Payment being so far off and the next main sales only 10 weeks away, many farmers decided to wait until February before parting with their cash , resulting in a clearance of 65% in comparison to almost 90 % at the previous sale. “The reduced clearance is more of a lack of confidence in the Industry at the moment, said Fiona Sloan the Simmental Development Manager and not a lack of confidence in the Breed. Commercial buyers were prepared to pay very good prices for the bulls they wanted and the quality bulls sold very well. I am delighted with the sale as are most of the vendors and those who didn’t manage to sell this time are the victims of the times we are currently living in and not in producing a lack of quality bulls within the breed. This was the best overall show of bulls I have seen at Perth and we can look forward to a bright future for the breed and even better sales in the spring when bulls will be needed for spring calving.”
Many of the high prices followed the judging of the previous day and the judge, Brian Grant, Druid Temple Farm, Old Edinburgh Road, Inverness stood by his Overall Champion when he paid 16,000 gns for Stralongford Trojan from J.J.Hannah, 55 Keeran Road, Rawe, Irvinestone, Northern Ireland. Trojan had previously had a very successful show season and is by Omorga Murray, a maternal brother to Omorga Samson, who sold in Perth in February for a breed record of 22,000gns. Top price of the day went to the Reserve Overall Champion, Slievenagh Talisman from Robin Boyd, Slievenagh Farm, 78 Ballynafie Road, Portglenone Co. Antrim. Talisman had previously been Reserve Simmental Male of the Year in Northern Ireland and is by the well known sire, Kilbride Farm Newry, a son of Dovefields Gallant. His dam, Slievenagh Madonna is by Cleenagh Flasher. Talisman sold to Henry Widdicome, Ashprington Court, Ashprington, Totnes, Devon, to join his well known Starline Herd.
In all four lots made five figure bids. Next in line came another bull from Northern Ireland, this time Billy and Michael Robson, Kilbride Farm Herd from Doagh, Ballyclare followed an outstanding trade for their females the previous evening when they produced Kilbride Farm Tweed, who attracted a 13,000gns bid from Neil McGeoch , Easter Blacklaw, Old Glasgow Road, Stewarton, Kilmarnock, to join his Hazelden Herd. Tweed is a son of Cleenah Flasher and is similarly bred to the Champion, going back to Kilbride Farm Newry on his Dams side.
Jimmy and Vikki Wood, Popes Farm, Longridge Road, Dutton, Preston, finally broke the Northern Ireland stronghold on the sale when they sold Popes Tonka to John and William Young, Skerrington Mains, Hurlford, Kilmarnock for 12,000gns. Tonka had a successful show season behind him and his sire, Corrick Major was a previous Perth Sale Champion in 2003. He is also a maternal half brother to Popes Laird who has done so well in the Corskie Herd.
Two bulls attracted bids of 9,000gns each. Firstly David Hazelton, Cohannan House, 25 Bovean Road, Dungannon Co. Tyrone, sold his strong red bull, Ranfurly Talisman T3, who had earlier been Reserve Senior Champion to Mr. R. Martyn, Wester Bleaton XX Another extensive show winner from Northern Ireland, Talisman is by Carnkern Titan an out of David’s famous Show cow, South Park King Kong Weikel 2ND. The other 9,000gns bid came from S. Knox and Sons, North Balloch Farm, XX when they purchased Kilbride Farm Tully, to give Billy and Michael Robson their second top price of the day leading to and average for the bulls the family sold 4 to average 6350gns. Tully is also by Kilbride Farm Newry and this time out of a home bred dam, Kilbride Farm Eunice who was a daughter of Kilbride Farm Mark who sold to Snaigow at a previous sale for 7,000gns.
R.E.Jones, Maesllymstyn Foel, Welshpool, who was showing at Perth for the first time was delighted to see his offering, Banwyn T-Rex , a heifers calf by Sterling Nelson sell to Southern Ireland breeder, Garrett Behan, Cloneygowan, Ballyfin, Port Laois, Co. Laois to join his Clonagh Simmental Herd
David Smith, Drumsleed, Fordoun, Laurencekirk, this time beat mum and dad Morag and Gerald to an 8000gns bid for Boswell Tornado a son of Beeches Kestrel and out of his home bred cow, Boswell Kelly. David also went on to win the young stock person of the year for the Perth Sale. Boswell went to the famous Sterling Herd to join Stephen Hitchin’s Boddington Estates, The Manor Boddington in the Costswolds.
Ian Green from Corskie toped off a good overall average for his sale when he sold Corskie Topgun for 7,000gns to Preston Farm, Preston Lane, Linlithgow. Topgun is by Burghbridge Lane . Another from the same camp, Corskie Terry a son of Ballinalare Farm Nightrider, changed hands at 6,500gns to Messrs J.J. Sutherland and S. Stainland, Thurso, Caithness.
Dorothy & Lesley Moffat, Innerwick, Dunbar, again did well at the sale when their 1st Prize winner from the previous day, Innerwick Triumph, a son of Oakhill Lennox, sold for 6,500gns to father and son in law partnership, Danny and Harry Fleming Whitsome Laws, Duns, Berwickshire.
In all 75 of the 118 lots forward were sold through the ring to an average of £4135

Shellthorn Dispersal leads the way at Bristol
An outstanding show of cattle at the British Simmental Society sale, which included the Dispersal of the Shellthorn Herd on behalf of Andy & Dianne Grossey, attracted a packed sale ring at the Bristol Sales Centre on Saturday 12th May 2007.
The sale, run by the South West Simmental club in conjunction with McCartneys and Stags auctioneers, has become an important sale for the breed, with buyers coming from all over the UK. “The increase in closed herds for health reasons and the need for easy to handle and manage cattle has ensured an increased demand for the Simmental” said Fiona Sloan the Society’s Breed Development Manager.
The eagerly awaited Dispersal of the Shellthorn Herd, from Lower Sea Farm, Sea, Ilminster, Somerset, did not disappoint the expectant crowd, when the string off outstanding females entered the ring following a parade of the well known base cow Heywood Hannadante 28th. Red Hannah, as she is known at home, is now retired and will see her days out at Lower Sea with the Grossey Family.
Highlight of the sale however was a Sterling Flint daughter, Shellthorn Hannadante 6th when a keen bidding war including two telephone bidders, saw her finally knocked down for 8,000gns to Messrs L.J. & A.J. Curry, Lowerdown Farm, West Lane, Felton, Somerset, to join their well known Winford Herd. A stylish young cow born in 2003, she already has an impressive show career behind her and sold with her heifer calf Hannadante 19th, a daughter of Quanrose Kellog. She had been immediately preceded by Shellthorn Hannadante 5th another Kellog daughter also with an outstanding heifer calf at foot, Hannadante 17th, this time by Starline Pompous from the Blackford Hawk line. Again from an outstanding show line, both she and her calf will no doubt bring further success to her new owner, Mr. Webster, Whittakers Barn Farm, Cracoe, Skipton, who paid 3,600gns for the privilege.
Two lots made 2,400gns. Firstly to David Watkins, Stormer Hall, Craven Arms, Shrops when he purchased yet another Kellog daughter, Shellthorne Katie 6th, with her outstanding bull calf Shellthorn Victorious at foot. Another Pompous calf with outstanding conformation, he looks like a great prospect for the future for his new owner.
Gerald and Morag Smith travelled from Drumsleed in Scotland to purchase Shellthorn Hannadante 9th also for 2,400gns. Yet another of the Kellog progeny this very smart heifer was sold in calf to stock sire Shellthorn Reflex who was later to sell for 2,000gns to Mr. Matthews, Woolcombe Farm, Sandy Way, South Molton, Devon.
Reflex had been chosen as a junior Stock sire for the proven cows in the herd and showed outstanding conformation and style.
The senior stock bull from Shellthorn, Starline Pompous, whose progeny had been on display throughout the sale sold to Mr. Swirling, Upper Bottom House Farm, Bottomhousefarm Lane, Chalfont, St Giles, for 3,500gns. His lines go back to Scottish Neff, Blackford Trident, Hockenhull Marvel, Gretna House Supersonic and Starline Decision.
Keen interest in the female section saw 42 of the 47 lots forward find new homes. Heading the section was Cliftonswood Beauty 4th from Mr. H. J. Brown, Cliftonswood Farm, Clifton-On-Teme, Worcs., who had taken the Overall Female Championship earlier in the day, judged by Colin Hutchings, Brompton Regis, Dulverton, Somerset. This stylish 2004 born daughter of Brinkton Brilliant was sold with her first heifer calf at foot, Cliftonswood Beauty 9th by Salisbury Challenger and in calf again to Camus Frontier. Doyle, Higher Fisherton Farm, Atherington, Umberleigh, Devon. She was sold in calf to Glenturk Rolex, who was purchased at Perth in 2005 for £17,000.
