Maiden heifer tops Dungannon Simmental trade at 2,800gns
Prices reached a ceiling of 2,800gns at the NI Simmental Cattle Breeders’ Club’s autumn show and sale, held at Dungannon Farmers’ Mart.

Topping trade was the much-admired first prize maiden heifer Ashland Topaz Janet bred by Pat and Frank Kelly from Tempo, County Fermanagh. Sired by the 11,000gns Team Celtic, she is the first calf out of the home-bred Ashland Topaz 2nd – one of ten cows in the herd.
Top price of the day 2,800gns went to the first prize winning Ashland Topaz Janet bred by Pat and Frank Kelly, Tempo.
This heifer boasts some of the breed’s proven bloodlines. Her dam goes back to the noted brood cow Raceview Matilda Stella, while her maternal grandsire Ashland Brandy, by the famous Raceview King, was sold privately as a stock bull to the NI-based Omorga and Loughside herds.
Attracting a tussle of bids, this fifteen-month-old heifer came under the hammer of auctioneer Trevor Wylie, selling via the telephone to the Barlow family’s Denizes Herd based in Lancashire.
Three generations of the Kelly family, Pat, Frank and Fintan, from Tempo, County Fermanagh, with their first prize winning heifer Ashland Topaz Janet, sold for a top price of 2,800gns at the NI Simmental Club’s autumn show and sale in Dungannon.
Following close behind at 2,700gns was the day’s male champion and reserve supreme champion Longbeach Juncker TSI+77 SRI+90 bred by Sean Burns, Rathfriland. Born in June 2018, he is by the polled sire Curaheen Gunshot, and out of a home-bred dam by the 20,000gns Auchorachan Wizard. Buyers were Messrs Dickson from Drumquin, County Tyrone.
Male and reserve supreme champion Longbeach Juncker realised 2,700gns for Sean Burns, Rathfriland
Judge Molly Bradley, Armagh, awarded the reserve male championship to the yearling bull Rehall Jordan TSI+70 SRI+73 bred by William and Keith Stubbs, Irvinestown. Sired by Delfur Decider, his dam is the Drumacritten Callum daughter Rehall Flower. This one failed to meet his reserve and returned home unsold.

A small entry of three bulls sold to average £2,345 (75%).
Claiming the day’s female and supreme championship ribbons was the two-year-old heifer Magheracrigan Iris bred by Wesley Abraham, Irvinestown. Sired by the 12,000gns Kilbride Farm Bantry, her dam is the Hillcrest Naughty daughter Broomfield Veamon. In-calf to Curaheen Apostle, she failed to meet her breeder’s expectations and was unsold.
Female and supreme overall champion at the NI Simmental Club’s autumn show and sale was Magheracrigan Iris exhibited by Allen Shortt, and owned by Wesley Abraham, Irvinestown.
The reserve female champion Glenock Daphne 4th realised 2,200gns for Stephen Millar, Newtownstewart. Born in April 2018, she is by Woodhall Ferrari and out of a home-bred dam by Lykke Sirius. This one sold for export to Scotland, having been snapped up pedigree herd owners Albert and Rachel Ann Henry from Knockallan Farm, Castle Douglas.

Judge praises quality of Simmental’s at NI National Show

A tremendous show with an incredible standard of livestock was how British Simmental Cattle Society president Michael Barlow described the breed’s inaugural NI National Show.
Mr Barlow from the noted Denizes Herd based in Lancashire, said he thoroughly enjoyed judging the event, held in conjunction with the 179th Omagh Show.
More than 50 entries from herds across the Province competed for a share of the £4,000 prize fund.
NI Simmental Cattle Breeders’ Club chairman Conard Fegan congratulated the exhibitors on a great show, and thanked principal sponsor Danske Bank, and the numerous agricultural and local businesses for their generous support. “It’s fantastic to see such a great turnout of cattle, and we were overwhelmed by the number of spectators in attendance.”
Stealing the show was the much-admired junior bull Ranfurly Jameson bred by breed stalwart David Hazelton from Dungannon. This eighteen-month-old entry caught the eye of Michael Barlow to secure the junior, male and supreme overall championship awards. He also claimed the DANI Rosebowl for the best performance recorded bull.
Sired by the noted Raceview King, this bull is out of the home-bred Carnkern Titan daughter Ranfurly Weikel 17th. He also secured the breed’s junior, male and supreme championship ribbons at Balmoral Show in May.
Ranfurly Jameson was junior champion, male champion and supreme overall champion at the NI National Simmental Show, held at Omagh.
Michael Barlow commented: “The overall champion is a fine example of the Simmental breed. He has great conformation, good legs and feet, and oozes breed character.”
It turned out to be a red-letter day for David and Jonny Hazelton, who won five first prize rosettes and a string of championship sashes and trophies. Their haul of plaudits included the reserve supreme championship, and the female and reserve female titles. The Ranfurly Herd – established more than 40 years ago – won the prize for the exhibitor gaining the most points at the show.

Claiming the female and reserve supreme championship awards was the three-year-old cow Ranfurly Weikel 18th VG87, shown with her January born Cleenagh Flasher heifer calf at foot.

Sired by Raceview King, Ranfurly Weikel 18th VG87, is bred from the Hillcrest Champion daughter Ranfurly Weikel 11th EX90. She was Simmental champion at Lurgan Show, and reserve champion at Armagh Show.
Her full sister Ranfurly Weikel 23rd secured the reserve female championship. This two-year-old heifer was female champion at Balmoral.

The January 2018 Cleenagh Jessica claimed the reserve junior championship for Robert and Julie Stinson from Enniskillen. Purchased at the Cleenagh dispersal sale last year, this heifer is one of three foundation females in the Roscultan Herd.
Sired by the 2014 and 2015 Balmoral champion Dermotstown Delboy, her dam is the Bridgemount Vixon daughter Stralongford Courtney. The Stinson’s made their showring debut at Balmoral, winning the reserve junior and reserve female championships at the 151st show.

The five-month-old bull calf Breaghey Kingdom secured the reserve male championship for Andrew and Zara Clarke, Tynan, County Armagh. Sired by Omorga Regan, he is bred from the Kilbride Farm Newry daughter Breaghey Beatrice – one of 14 cows in the herd.

Bulls to 3,300gns and 3,200gns as average climbs by £248
A cow with heifer calf at foot claimed the top price of 4,200gns at the British Simmental Cattle Society’s show and sale, held at Dungannon Farmers’ Mart.
The September 2012 Castlemount Modesty was bred by Duncan McDowell from Newtownards. Sired by Arkmill Franklyn, she is a daughter of the Omorga Volvo-bred Slievenagh Belle 10. Her five-week-old heifer calf is by the Auroch Bullet son Seafort Gill. This attractive outfit caught attention from a number of pedigree breeders, and was secured by Chris Traynor for his Kilmore Herd based at Armagh.
Bull trade peaked at 3,300gns, paid to Billy Robson OBE, and sons Michael and Norman, Doagh, Ballyclare, for the male and supreme overall champion Kilbride Farm Impact TSI+94 SRI+96. Born in August 2017 he is by herd sire Crugmelyn Brenin, and out of the Cairnview Snazzy daughter Kilbride Farm Fanni 33E. In the breed’s top 10% for eye muscle area +4.9, he was snapped up by John Hawthorne from Mowhan, County Armagh.

The pre-sale show was judged by Orkney suckler herd owner Terry Coghill and sponsored by Irwins Feed. Mr Coghill, who runs 130 commercial cows said there were some nice bulls at the top end of each class. “The overall champion is a strong and powerful bull with good conformation.”

Second highest price of the day 3,200gns was paid to Nigel Glasgow, Cookstown, for the first prize winning Bridgewater Farm Jezza TSI+79 SRI+90. This January 2018 born entry is by the 2014 and 2015 Balmoral Show champion Dermotstown Delboy, and out of a home-bred Samark Superman daughter. Ranked in the top 5% for calving ease +7.0, and top 10% for eye muscle area +4.8, and milk +9, he sold to WE Carson from Downpatrick, County Down.

Nigel Glasgow had a memorable day at the Dungannon saleyard, also securing the reserve male and reserve supreme championship titles with Bridgewater Farm Isaiah TSI+48 SRI+65. Another by Dermotstown Delboy, he was born in September 2017, and is out of the Curaheen Apostle daughter Bridgewater Farm Kay. Described by Terry Coghill as a nice stylish bull with good shape, he sold for 2,900gns to Owen Kelly from Dromara, County Down.

Next best at 2,700gns was the third placed Derrycallaghan Ironman ET TSI+75 SRI+83 bred from Harold Stubbs, and grandson Alan Burleigh, Lisnaskea. This October 2017 Samark Superman son is bred from the Popes Laird daughter Corskie Vesna. Buyer was D Rooney from Newry, County Down.

Auctioneer Trevor Wylie reported that 7 bulls sold to average £2,760 per head – an increase of £248 on this time last year; and 12 females changed hands to level at £1,942.30 each.
Leading the collective female entry at 2,500gns was the Robson family’s female champion Kilbride Farm Eunice 2371. This two-year-old heifer is by Corskie Damario, and is out of a home-bred dam by Crugmelyn Brenin. Scanned in-calf to Sneumgaard Imperator, she joins Alan and Ann Kennedy’s Lurgill Herd at Upper Ballinderry near Lisburn.

Next best at 2,200gns was the June 2017 born Knockreagh Ivory bred by NI Simmental Cattle Breeders’ Club chairman Conrad Fegan, and father Val, from Rostrevor. Sired by Popes Barclay, she is bred from the Kilbride Farm Bantry daughter Omorga Fionnula 13. Buyer was William Ferguson for his Sperrin View Herd, Stewartstown.
Claiming the reserve female championship was the January 2018 Rehall Jane bred by William and Keith Stubbs, Irvinestown. This polled heifer was sired by Losning Iver, and is bred from the Omorga Regan daughter Rehall Elizabeth. She joins the County Fermanagh based Drumbulcan Herd at 1,800gns.

A draft offering from Andrew Hanna’s Stralongford Herd, Trillick, peaked at 1,700gns, realised by the November 2016 Stralongford Hyacinth. Sired by Ashland Brandy, she is out of a home-bred dam by Seaview Lazer. This one is in-calf to Popes Barclay.
