CORRICK MAJOR MARCHES TO 4800GNS TOP PRICE AT THE AUTUMN NORTHERN IRELAND SIMMENTAL CLUB SALE

CORRICK MAJOR MARCHES TO 4800GNS TOP PRICE AT THE AUTUMN NORTHERN IRELAND SIMMENTAL CLUB SALE

Solid trade driven by commercial demand.

The Autumn Northern Ireland Simmental Club sale took place on Friday 21 October at Dungannon Mart, where five bulls sold, all going to commercial homes, to a top price of 4,800gns and an average of £3,003.

Corrick Major – 4,800gns Top Price & Reserve Male Champion

Top of the lots at 4,800gns was the Reserve Male Champion Corrick Major from Cecil and Scott Mcilwaine, Newtonstewart, Co Tyrone, whose 20-cow pedigree herd was established in 1979. Corrick Major, is a June 2021 born lad sired by Seafort Gill, who also sired the herds March Dungannon Male Champion Corrick Laird, and the 8,000gns Corrick Logic, sold at Stirling in February this year. In total, Seafort Gill’s five Corrick sons sold to date have averaged £4851.20 apiece. Bred out of Corrick Heidi, who goes back to the 12,000gns Kilbride Farm Bantry, Major was purchased by F Watson, who runs a 150 strong suckler operation in Kircubbin, Co Down. Commenting on his purchase Mr Watson said “I was delighted to secure Major, for me he ticked all of the boxes. A good balanced bull from front to back, he carried himself very well. We breed all our own replacements and finish all our other calves for beef and the Simmental is the perfect breed to produce good mothers and as a terminal sire”.

Dressogue Mario – 2,500gns Supreme & Male Champion

The pre-sale show judge Paul McArdle travelled from Co Monaghan, Eire, where his Broomfield Simmental herd is based. His pick for the Supreme and Male Champion, Dressogue Mario, was next in the trade stakes, and the first of a trio of bulls to be knocked down for 2,500gns. The May 2021 born Mario, is out of the 8,000gns Delfur Decider-sired Dressogue Gloria and by the herd sire Clonagh Fifty Shades who has bred over 70 sons and daughters into the Dressogue herd since his purchase in 2015. Bred and exhibited by Seamus O’Kane, Mario is the first Dungannon champion for the 35 cow Dressogue herd based in Omagh, Co Tyrone, and on only his third visit to the sale. Most of the family’s sales from their closed herd are made from the farm gate to repeat customers. E McMenamin, Kesh, Co Fermanagh, was the man with his hand in the air as the hammer went down.

Judge Paul McArdle, Co Monaghan, Eire

Matching the 2,500gns price tag was Phillip Robb’s 19-month-old bull Slieve Croob Magnificent, from Ballynahinch, Co Down. Sired by the homebred Slieve Croob Juggernaut, his dam is Kilbride Farm Fanni 54h, a third time calving daughter of the 7,000gns Stirling Reserve Senior Champion Corskie Damario. Mark Fawcett, of the Rushlin Simmental herd, Gortadrehid, Co Fermanagh was the lucky purchaser and commenting on his purchase Mr Fawcett said, “I was really pleased to secure Magnificent, as I need a durable bull to work on my hill farm. We have a 20 head Simmental cross suckler herd which we run alongside our Marina and Caravan park and I was looking for a bull which is going to get the job done without me having to watch over him”.

Cladymore Mr Muscle – 2,500gs Junior Champion

The other bull to secure 2,500gns, was Cladymore Mr Muscle, who had been tapped out as the Junior Champion and first in his class in the presale show. Offered for sale by AW Reaney and Sons, Mowhan, Co Armagh, and purchased by Thomas Hall, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, he is the eighth calf to be bred out of the Ashland Brandy daughter Cladymore Edel, and with the popular AI bull Auchorachan Hercules being the sire of this August 2021 born bull.

The final bull sold was the blue ticket winner Camus Macduff, who was purchased by Edgar Cumins, Lisburn, Co Antrim, for 2,000gns. A 17-month-old, who was offered for sale by Mr J Campbell, Strabane, Co Tyrone, Macduff is by the 8,500gns Islavale Cracker, and is out of Camus Imprint, who goes back to the Eire bred Ex92-rated Dermotstown Delboy, the Balmoral Champion in 2014 and 2015.

Corrick Luma – 3,700gns Reserve Female Champion

There were seven quality Simmental females on offer and with five sold to average £2,772. The top priced at 3,700gns was Corrick Luma, the Reserve Female Champion from Cecil and Scott Mcilwaine, who had also secured the top price in the bull section. Luma is a September 2020 born daughter of the 2013 Ploughing bull champion Curaheen Dickens and Corrick Francis 14, who goes back to the Roscommon Premier Show junior bull champion Carbery Carribbean. She was purchased by Ian MaGill, who takes her back to join his Ballyrolly Simmental herd in Newtownards, Co Down.

Just behind at 3,600gns was D McElmurry’s 23-month-old heifer Wellbray Diana Kim, from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, who caught the eye of Chris Traynor of the Kilmore Simmental herd, Armagh, Co Armagh, when she placed second in her class earlier in the day. The popular AI bull Samark Superman is the sire here, and Kim is bred out of the first calving Raceview K Diana Kim, who is a daughter of the prolific AI bull Kilbride Farm Newry, who has bred over 1200 progeny into the national herd.

Two lots then went on to sell for 2,000gns a piece. The first being the Dressogue Maisie, a blue ticket winner bought forward for sale by Seamus O’Kane, Omagh, Co Tyrone. Sired by the 11,000gns Islavale Invincible, her Dam is Dressogue Irish Lady, who goes back to the Eire bred Clonagh Fifty Shades. Edward Henry, Newtownards, Co Down, was the purchaser of this March 2021 born heifer.

Breaghey Vida-M420 – 2,000gns Reserve Supreme & Female Champion Female

The Reserve Supreme and Female champion and 19-month-old Breaghey Vida-M420, was the other heifer to be knocked down at 2,000gns. Bred and exhibited by Andrew Clarke, Tynan, Co Armagh, she was snapped up by Connor Wilkinson, Lisburn, Co Antrim, to join his Killultagh Simmental herd. She is out of the Breaghey Vida 1, who goes back to the aforementioned Dermotstown Delboy, and  sired by Omorga Regan.

Selling for 1,900gns and completing the Simmental lots was Rehall Majesty, a heifers calf bred out of the 8,000gns Delfur Decider-sired Rehall Kerry. Sired by Rehall Karl, the July 2021 born Majesty, who stood third in her class, was presented by W and K Stubbs, Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh and purchased by P Woods, Collone, Co Armagh.

KILLIWORGIE MIRANDAS LOTTI IS CROWNED THE SUPREME CHAMPION OF THE 2022 SIMMENTAL ‘VIRTUAL’ SHOW

KILLIWORGIE MIRANDAS LOTTI IS CROWNED THE SUPREME CHAMPION OF THE 2022 SIMMENTAL ‘VIRTUAL’ SHOW

Supreme Champion & Female Champion Killiworgie Mirandas Lotti

After seven weeks, six main classes and the Female and Male Championships, we have reached the pinnacle of this years British Simmental Virtual show.

Now in its third year, the competition was launched in 2020 to bring ‘some fun and competition’ for members, who were missing the summer show season during the Covid pandemic. Due to the popularity of the competition in its inaugural year and in 2021, the Society decided to run the competition again for 2022 and we have been delighted by the support that it has received. With a reduced format of just three male and three female classes, we have received a fantastic 286 entries.

Rising to the top, this year’s Supreme champion is the January 2020 born heifer Killiworgie Mirandas Lotti from Steve & Gill Gummow, Higher Killiworgie Farm, Newquay, Cornwall, who beat out 70 other heifers to win her class and 184 other females to collect the Female championship accolade which was awarded earlier this week.

Sired by the 2017 English National Show Reserve Champion Lynfield Hamish 16, Killiworgie Mirandas Lotti is out of Boars Head Miranda EX90, bred by Mr RJ Grenham, who goes back to the Irish-bred AI bull Seaview Prince Charming.

The Supreme Championship judge was David Sapsed of the esteemed Heathbrow Simmental herd, Codicote, Hertfordshire, which was established back in 1995. Of the champion Lottie, he commented, “I felt that this heifer was a well-balanced beast, very feminine looking and stylish, with a superb top line, width and length and excellent legs and feet. The aforementioned reasons are why I have decided to make her my Supreme champion. Given good luck she should grow into a wonderful breeding cow.

Having said all of that, I should take nothing away from my reserve Champion, the Male Champion Auchorachan Malt who I particularly like as he is tall, upstanding and stylish with good legs and feet, a great body with an excellent head, neck and shoulders. He also should have a bright future in front of him.

Reserve Supreme Champion & Male Champion Auchorachan Malt

Both the male and female champions represented great examples of young Simmental animals but, overall Killiworgie Mirandas Lotti is my pick for the Supreme Champion.

I would like to the thank the Society for asking me to judge the British Simmental 2022 Virtual Show Supreme Championship and to all of the members who took part.”

The Society would like to thank our Supreme Champion judge David Sapsed and all of his fellow judges who kindly gave up their time to select the winners of this year’s show: our Female Champion judge Richard McCulloch; our Male Champion judge Simon Key; and our class judges Gary Christie, Jonny Hazelton, Richard Cumming, Frank Kelly, Gavin Brown and Rob Fitton, who we think you will agree have done an excellent job.

We would also like to extend our thanks to all of our members who supported the competition by submitting entries and to everyone who has joined in the fun on Facebook, from the United Kingdom and across the world.

AUCHORACHAN MALT WINS THE 2022 SIMMENTAL ‘VIRTUAL’ SHOW MALE CHAMPIONSHIP

AUCHORACHAN MALT WINS THE 2022 SIMMENTAL ‘VIRTUAL’ SHOW MALE CHAMPIONSHIP

It’s a ‘big up’ and hearty congratulations to D & R Durno & Sons, Ballindalloch, Banffshire, whose March 2021 born bull Auchorachan Malt 21 has been judged as the Male Champion in this year’s Simmental ‘Virtual’ Show.

Entirely homebred, Auchorachan Malt is by the noted Auchorachan Hercules 16, whose sons averaged £10,500 in 2021 and have sold up to a top price to date of 18,000gns. Auchorachan Malt’s dam is Auchorachan Hilly 8 EX90, a daughter of the 9,000gns Team Fergus 14 EX91. Auchorachan Malt’s Championship win saw him prevail from over 100 Simmental bulls entered across the three classes.

Judging the Male Championship was Simon Key who runs the noted Key herd at Abbey Farm, Mundham, Loddon, Norwich and who commented: “Firstly, I’d like to thank the British Cattle Simmental Society for asking me to judge the Overall Male Championship in this year’s Virtual Show. Secondly, a big well done to everyone who has entered this fun competition and had a go. As ‘amateur snappers’ it’s very difficult to take that spot-on picture that you’re entirely happy with and does your animal full justice. However, a great entry again that continues to highlight and promote the Simmental breed so well.

The three first prize bulls in the Championship line-up are a credit to their breeders and owners, and I’m sure each will do a fantastic job if they are put forward to sell at a sale, or to be used at home in their respective herds. It was a tough decision as all are top bulls and look to have different strengths and characteristics.

In his picture the Overall Champion Auchorachan Malt really looks a long bull, clean through the middle, and from the angle well-muscled with a good second thigh. He just had the edge for me in a very close competition, and well done to the Durno team. Lastly, I’d just like to say that the Simmental ‘Virtual’ Show has once again been great to follow, and with the entries again being a credit to all.”

A big thank you is extended to Simon for his judging and his warm comments.

KILLIWORGIE MIRANDAS LOTTI IS CROWNED THE SUPREME CHAMPION OF THE 2022 SIMMENTAL ‘VIRTUAL’ SHOW

FLASHY’ KILLIWORGIE MIRANDAS LOTTI WINS THE FEMALE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2022 SIMMENTAL ‘VIRTUAL’ SHOW!

In the first ‘big reveal’ of the 2022 Simmental ‘Virtual’ Show, huge congratulations are extended to Steve & Gill Gummow, Higher Killiworgie Farm, Newquay, Cornwall who have won this year’s Female Championship with Killiworgie Mirandas Lotti.

The January 2020 born Lotti becomes the first heifer to win the Female Championship in what is the third staging of the Simmental ‘Virtual’ Show, and after prevailing in a class of 71 heifers, and 185 females in all across the three female classes.

Sired by the 2017 English National Show Reserve Champion Lynfield Hamish 16, Killiworgie Mirandas Lotti is out Boars Head Miranda EX90, bred by Mr RJ Grenham, and who goes back to the Irish-bred AI bull Seaview Prince Charming.

The Female Championship was judged by Richard McCulloch who runs the noted Overhill House herd at Armadale, West Lothian. Commenting, Mr McCulloch said: “First of all, I’d like to thank the British Simmental Cattle Society for asking me to judge this year’s Virtual Female Championship 2022. I would also like to congratulate the individual class judges who did such a great job – well done!

My Champion is Killiworgie Mirandas Lotti, an outstanding, very flashy heifer, and just my type. Full of breed character, she has a great body with a square end, a good top line and a super head. In my opinion, she’s a terrific Simmental heifer and a very worthy Champion.

I would also like to complement the two other female class winners that were put in front of me. First of all, Haystar Diamond is a real smart calf, well grown for her age and with great potential. Secondly, Gerrard Belinda the 60th, a good working cow with lots of depth, easy fleshed with a good udder – a great advert for the breed.

Well done to all participants that entered this year’s Simmental ‘Virtual’ Show – what an advertisement for this fantastic breed! Congratulations to everyone and wishing you all the very best.”

We’d like to thank Richard and also to echo his comments. Thank you also to everyone who entered females in this years Simmental ‘Virtual’ Show. In recognition of the live summer show season being back this year, we tightened the classes a little and reduced the number to six in all, three female and three male, and followed by the Overall Championships. Again, we’ve had terrific support with 185 entries across the three female classes.
