  • Annick Memphis wins Overall Junior, & Junior Continental Interbreed
  • Blackford wins Joe Watson Memorial Pairs
Islavale Viva 8, Overall Senior Champion

The Islavale herd of Mr WS Stronach, Berryleys Farm, Grange, Keith, and the Annick herd of Mr LD Quarm, Holehouse Farm, By Irvine, Ayrshire took the top Simmental honours within a strong show of Simmentals at the Stars of the Future Calf Show held on Saturday 13th November at United Auction’s Stirling Agricultural Livestock Centre.  The quality in depth of the Simmental line up was confirmed when the Annick herd went on to lift the Junior Continental Interbreed tile, whilst the Blackford herd of WG MacPherson, Blackford, Croy, Inverness took the Joe Watson Memorial Trophy (Interbreed) for Best Pair.

Simmental judge Laura Beattie, Garmouth herd

In front of the Simmental judge for the day, Laura Beattie who runs the Garmouth herd at Corskie Farm, Garmouth, Fochabers, Moray, the Islavale herd picked up both the Overall Senior and Reserve Overall Senior titles with Islavale Viva 8, and Islavale Liquorice respectively.  The September 2020 born Islavale Viva 8 is by Curaheen Giant 2, and is out of  Islavale Viva 2 (ET) EX 94 (EX2), a Chestermann Varney daughter.

Commenting on her Overall Senior, Laura Beattie said:  “The Senior Champion was a lovely, correct heifer, and was very well fleshed. She had great width, was very square over her plates, and was just full of breed character with a very sweet face.”

Islavale Liquorice, Reserve Overall Senior Champion

Following her through to take the Reserve Senior Overall was her stablemate in the shape of Islavale Liquorice, an October 2020 heifer by Ranfurly Confederate C24 11 EX 94, and out of Islavale Ebony, a Woodhall Walker daughter.  Capping a fine day’s showing, the April 2021 born Islavale Mojito picked up the Reserve Junior Female award.  This heifer is by Curaheen Gunshot (P), and is out of Islavale Illusion (ET) VG 87. Islavale Viva 8, Islavale Liquorice, and Islavale Mojito are all entered into the much-anticipated Simmental Next Generation Sale of Females & Weaned Calves due to be held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on 3rd December.

Annick Memphis, Overall Junior Champion and Overall Continental Junior Interbreed Champion

Taking the Simmental Overall Junior title, and then a fantastic Overall Continental Junior Interbreed title, was the January 2021 born Annick Memphis, and shown on the day by stockman Andrew Perratt.  This young bull is by Wolfstar Golddigger 15, and is a heifer’s calf being out of Annick Desiree’s Joy VG87, who is a Corskie Callum daughter.  This double win was a poignant one with it being the first show outing for the Annick herd since the herd owner Lachlan Quarm sadly passed away earlier this year. Of her Junior Champion Laura Beattie commented:  “This was a terrific young bull with a bit of power about him, good bone, and plenty of style.  He’s very correct, with plenty of breed character, and is a great example of the Simmental breed.  I think this is a young bull with a lot of future and potential.”

Of her day’s judging generally, and the cattle in front of her, Laura said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the day and thought that it was a great show of Simmentals.  I’d like to congratulate all the exhibitors with cattle forward, and who really did the breed proud.”

Denizes Cadette 37th

In a further international sale of British Simmental genetics, twenty-one pedigree embryos, from the Denizes herd of MA Barlow & Sons, Nr Leyland, Lancashire, have been sold and exported to the United States based company Horizon Genetics.

In looking specifically to source Simmentals from the UK, a representative of Horizon Genetics first approached the Barlows through Facebook.  Extensive discussions and exchanges of pictures followed to meet Horizon’s criteria of visual appearance, bloodlines, and performance figures.  The required matings were established, and the embryos thereafter collected and subsequently exported through Mark Knutsford, Celltech Embryo Transfer Ltd.

Nineteen Grade A embryos were collected and exported from the mating of the 2018 born Denizes Cadette 37th, a Kilbride Farm Delboy 12 daughter out of Denizes Cadette 28th, and the sire Ballinalare Galaxy 15.  A further two Grade A embryos were exported from the mating of Denizes Nelly 8th, a Cairnview Snazzy daughter out of Denizes Nelly 5th, and sired by Brookwood Alla King. In both instances semen for the matings was supplied for the respective bulls by the Chester based Cogent UK.  The bulls had required to be tested for Schmallenburg prior to collection.

Commenting on the sale, John Barlow said: “We are delighted to see Denizes Simmental genetics sell to the United States.  Horizon Genetics are showing considerable interest in British Simmental and in sourcing these embryos they are looking for quality female lines from which to breed bulls.”

Over the course of the previous two years, Horizon Genetics have sourced a number of British Simmental bulls subsequently exported to an AI centre in Italy and with semen collections destined for distribution and use in both the USA and China.

Also in the course of the last twenty four months a number of export sales has seen a combination of British Simmental live cattle and genetics sold to Australia, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria; in addition to Italy; USA; and China.

SPRINGFIELD IN ‘MAJOR’ WIN AT BORDERWAY AGRI EXPO SIMMENTAL CALF SHOW

  • Newbiemains Leonidas takes Reserve Senior Championship
Springfield Major 21

The bull calf Springfield Major 21 from Gavin Brown, Springfield Farm, Penicuik, Midlothian took the top honours when winning the Overall Championship and at the 2021 Simmental Calf Show at the Borderway Agri Expo held on Friday 29th October at Harrison & Hetherington’s Borderway Mart, Carlisle.

The event, held jointly by the North West Simmental Club and the British Simmental Cattle Society, saw an original entry of 62 calves catalogued and with exhibitors from Wales, Scotland, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Lancashire, and Yorkshire.

In front of a good crowd at ringside the Simmental Calf Show was judged by Cameron Jackson who runs the establishing Future Simmental herd at Woodyett Farm, Lanark.  April 2021 born, Springfield Major is by the herd’s stock bull Islavale Jabba, and is out of Hazelden Jingle 40th.  After winning Class 4, bull calves born after 1st March 2021, this young bull won the Junior Championship before being given the judge’s tap as the day’s Overall Champion.   For the Springfield herd, which consists of 25 breeding females, it was their first time entering the Borderway Agri Expo event and their Championship win followed hard on the heels of the recent Stirling Bull Sale where they sold bulls at 6500, and 5000gns.  The 6500gns Springfield Legacy is a half-brother to the Agri Expo Champion Springfield Major, with both being out of Hazelden Jingle 40th, and who was bought at the Hazelden Herd Dispersal Sale as a calf at foot.    Speaking afterwards, a delighted Gavin Brown said: “It’s my first time here and I was just really keen to support the breed and the calf show.  The Springfield herd is continuing to establish and it’s fantastic to win an event such as this and amongst your peers. It keeps the herd momentum going and makes all the hard work very much worth it!”   From here the plan is to aim Springfield Major at the October 2022 Stirling Bull Sales.  Rounding off a good day, the Springfield herd also placed second in three further classes.

Overall and Reserve Champion

Commenting on his Overall Champion, the judge Cameron Jackson said: “This calf just oozed style and character and he was very correct. He’s just a perfect calf for his age and very much a breeder’s bull in the making.”  Of the Simmental show generally, he went on to say: “I think it’s as strong a show of Simmental calves as we’ve seen in a few years.  The modern Simmental for me is going in the right direction being as dual purpose as possible, and breeding tremendous females, and bulls with shape.”

Denizes Monty 21

Following the Champion through when taking the Reserve Junior Championship, and the Reserve Overall Champion, was the winner from Class 3, Bull Calf born on or between 1st January 2021 & 28th February 2020,  in the shape of Denizes Monty 21 from MA Barlow & Sons, Ulnes, Nr Leyland, Lancashire.  This January 2021 born calf brough a combination of both breeding and performance. 18,000GNS AUCHORACHAN LANDMARK TOPS THE TRADE AT STIRLING SIMMENTAL BULL SALE

18,000GNS AUCHORACHAN LANDMARK TOPS THE TRADE AT STIRLING SIMMENTAL BULL SALE

• 57 bulls sold, up 5 on the year
• Bulls average £5961, up £372 on the year
• 22 bulls sell at 6000gns or more, with three at five figures
• 7 Islavale bulls average £9185
• Corskie lead female trade at 6000gns

Auchorachan Landmark 18,000gns

The junior bull Auchorachan Landmark 20 from D&R Durno & Sons, Auchorachan, Glenlivet, Ballindalloch, Banffshire sold for 18,000gns to lead the Simmental bull sale at United Auction’s Stirling Agricultural Centre on Tuesday 19th October. From the youngest class of bulls on the day, Auchorachan Landmark 20 is a May 2020 born calf sired by the homebred stock bull Auchorachan Hercules, and is out of Auchorachan Holly, a cow described as having ‘loads of milk’. Auchorachan Landmark himself carried a Maternal (Milk) figure of +10 placing him in the top 10% of the breed for this trait. The herd sire Auchorachan Hercules has been breeding well in the 60 cow Auchorachan pedigree herd with sons, prior to Stirling, averaging over 8000 at pedigree sales.

Purchasing the top price was Brian and Stuart Grant for their Dellfield pedigree herd at Druid Temple Farm, Old Edinburgh Road, Inverness-shire. Commenting, Brian Grant said: “He looked a really good bull to our eye and we know and like the breeding on his dam line. He’s a well grown young bull with good shape about him, and colour was also important to get some of the darker colour into the herd. It’s the most we’ve paid for a bull and an investment in the herds future.” Auchorachan Landmark will be used on both pedigree and cross breds with the herd comprising of 170 cows in total and including 40-50 pure breds.

The Auchorachan herd’s top sale price to date is the 20,000gns paid for Auchorachan Wizard. With a bit of connectivity, Auchorachan Landmark is from the same family with Auchorachan Holly being a grand-daughter of Wizard’s mother. It was a solid day’s trading at Stirling for the Durnos who had further bulls sold at 8500, 6500, and 4500gns respectively.

The Simmental sale as a whole saw 57 bulls sold, up five on the year, and to an average of £5961, which was also up by £372. In all, 22 bulls sold at 6000gns and over including three at over five figures. Commenting the Society’s General Manager Iain Kerr said: “It was good to see more bulls sold on the year and also an increase of £372 on the averages. Simmental sales have been very strong in this last year or so with commercial buyers driving the trade and buying bulls to breed top quality breeding females. We’d have liked to have seen a stronger clearance, but there was again a ready demand for long, clean, easy fleshing Simmental bulls, with good milk and maternal figures.”

Islavale Lachlan 12,500gns

It was another tremendous Simmental sale for the prolific 160 pedigree cow Islavale herd of Mr WS Stronach, Berryleys Farm, Grange, Keith. A strong team of bulls saw seven in all sell to 12500, 10000, 9000, 8500, 7800, 7000, and 6500gns, to gross £64,365 and a mighty average of £9185. For good measure Islavale bulls also won the Overall Supreme (their eighth in all and first at the October Sale), Intermediate, and Junior Championships in the pre-sale show which was judged by Mr Simon Key of the Key Herd, Abbey Farm, Mundham, Loddon, Norwich.
Leading their consignment was the March 2020 born Islavale Lachlan 20. This bull, who stood second in his class to the Intermediate Champion, is by the ten-years-old Ranfurly Confederate, and is out of the Atlow Dixon daughter Islavale Innocent. Heading north, this bull who was Top 10% for both Calving Ease Direct, and Gestation Length, was purchased by Messrs Swanson, Quarryside, Caithness.

Islavale Lord 10,000gns

At 10,000gns was the Intermediate Champion himself, Islavale Lord 20. Another March 2020 born bull, Lord is by the herd’s main stock sire at present, Corskie Highlander 16 EX 92, a Dirnanean Bradley son, and is out of the Ranfurly Confederate daughter Islavale Honeypot. Another to go commercially, this bull was bought by Inverdunning Ltd, Dunning, Perthshire.

Islavale Loch Ness 9,000

The run of Islavale prices continued with Islavale Loch Ness making 9000gns when selling to the Greencap pedigree herd of Craegorry, Dalachy Farm, Aberdour, Fife. A second prize winner, this March 2020 born bull is another by Corskie Highlander 16 EX 92, and is out of another Ranfurly Confederate daughter, Islavale Daisy. Commenting, Colin Inglis said: “I really liked the style and presence of this bull, and he’s got a good set of figures behind him. The figures and breeding just fit and suit what I’m needing and he’ll be used mainly on pedigrees but also on some commercials.” The Greencap pedigree herd consists of 30 Simmental breeding females that are run alongside 120 commercial cows.

Ballymoney Larry 9,000

Also at the 9000gns mark was the Northern Irish bull Ballymoney Larry 20 from Mrs MH Kilpatrick, Banbridge, Co Down. A bull with size and power, Ballymoney Larry 20 had placed first in Class Four in the Senior section. March 2020 born, he is the first son of Saltire Impressive 17 who was purchased for 14,000gns at Stirling at the corresponding sale in 2018. Purchasing this bull, who carried good figures for growth and milk, was Delfur Farms who run the Delfur pedigree herd at Dundurcas, Rothes, Aberlour. Speaking to this purchase, the herd manager Stephen Allan said: “We liked this bull’s breeding lines and he’s suitable to use on all of our cows. He’s got size and width and we think he will complement our cows and bring a consistency of breeding. We’ve got 150 cows, of which 30 are pure not pedigree, and the he’ll be used predominantly for the pedigrees.”
